Ama - HANALEI
Ama
Description
Perched in scenic HANALEI, this stylish ramen spot pairs stunning views and expertly crafted cocktails with a concise, shareable menu. Pork buns, some ramen variations and desserts earn high marks, and the bar seating is ideal for small parties. Experiences vary: several guests praise attentive staff and ambiance, while others call the broth bland, portions pricey and service inconsistent — including a reported accessibility mishap. Reservations are advised for a date-night or special-meal vibe, but value and consistency can be hit-or-miss.

I may be a bit spoiled by the ramen in Japan or from the Bay Area, but the ramen here was truly disappointing—simply terrible. To make matters worse, our server seemed completely inexperienced and messed up our order. I would strongly recommend avoiding this restaurant at all costs. Food: 1, Service: 1, Atmosphere: 5.
The view from the restaurant is undeniably stunning and was arguably AMA’s only redeeming quality. Unfortunately, the food failed to live up to even moderate expectations. Out of the several dishes my party of six tried, only the green curry ramen was passable; the rest were lackluster and unimpressive. The most troubling part of our visit, however, was the appalling behavior of the hostess. Not only was she rude and dismissive, but she also laughed at us when we attempted to explain the need for a seating adjustment to accommodate a member of our party with a disability. Her reaction was not only unprofessional but deeply insensitive and disrespectful. Worse yet, her outright refusal to assist or consider alternatives seemed to disregard basic decency and potentially violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which mandates that businesses provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities. While we understand the challenges of managing seating in a busy restaurant, the hostess made no effort to help and instead belittled our concerns. This treatment stood in stark contrast to the rest of the staff, who were kind and attentive. Unfortunately, the hostess’s shocking behavior overshadowed their efforts, leaving us deeply disappointed and unlikely to return.
If you visit the island of Kauai you have to make a special trip to visit AMA in Hanalei. Every single thing I had there was amazing. I started off with a homemade ube soda and cream, the best brussel sprouts I’ve ever had and closed with their ahi ramen dishes and the entire meal was so satiating. I almost forgot to talk about the view since the food was so amazing, the view is literally out of this world. There’s nothing like being able to have an epic meal while watching a waterfall off the mountains of mama Kauai.
