Mushtaqs has long been celebrated for its authentic Indian cuisine, renowned for fresh ingredients and distinct flavors. Yet, recent visitors have reported a decline in quality, with dishes often coming up short in flavor and preparation. From overcooked prawns to bland sauces and disappointing portion sizes, the once-beloved restaurant faces scrutiny as patrons express confusion and disappointment. However, others continue to tout its excellence, including memorable dishes like lamb korma and incredible pakoras. While some still rave about its high-quality offerings, a growing number are now seeking alternatives in Hamilton’s culinary landscape.

After seeing Mr. Mushtaq on the news for employing Indian chefs, I decided to try his restaurant. I ordered for home delivery, which was a pleasant experience over the phone and arrived in about 30 minutes. The veg pakora and chicken tikka karahi were enjoyable, but the chicken tikka masala had a strange floral taste and creamy slightly pink color. The pilau rice was brown instead of the traditional bright yellow saffron rice, and had an overpowering flowery perfume-like fragrance that didn't complement the curry dishes. The garlic naan was unusually thin. The biggest issue was feeling bloated after the meal and experiencing stomach discomfort the next day, making me unsure if I would order again.

On a Wednesday evening, I was in the mood for some food. My friend Ian suggested trying out Mushtaqs, which Fiona M. had highly recommended. I asked Ian if he was up for Indian food and he enthusiastically agreed. The restaurant was less than 10 minutes away, so we got there quickly. We parked our car in the back and walked in to find the place quite busy for a Wednesday evening, with a few couples and a group of six. We ordered our drinks and the waiter explained how the buffet worked since we were first-time visitors. We enjoyed the variety of poppadoms with different sauces for starters, which were delicious. Our shared starter platter had a good mix of flavors, though I wished it included fish pakora. The buffet had everything from mild curries to spicy dishes, and I particularly enjoyed the pilau rice with my chicken korma and chasni. A warm naan bread awaited us at our table, which was a nice surprise. The food was excellent, with the korma and chasni being especially tasty, and the pilau rice complementing them well. For dessert, we were offered either ice cream or coffee; Ian had coffee while I opted for a cheeky ice cream with strawberry sauce. It was a perfect way to end the meal. I'm glad I remembered Mushtaqs and would definitely come back. The quality of the food lived up to the hype surrounding the restaurant and its award-winning chef. Yum!
