What Dorit Thiel doesn't like about Matsumi:
the oldest Japanese restaurant in hamburg. it is old, from a reason, from the praises only one note to the peculiarities the currency in 1982 is not the same and the inflation is also not the same. quality was good, but not worth the extreme price tag.... what can I say we have just gone for a doner kebab. another note, which is not true with the personal. is it normal to judge customers on their faces?! how insultin... I was in the mood for an evening of Japanese cuisine, and the reviews of this restaurant have arrived and I was curious. So I reserved a place in the sushi bar. the restaurant radiates a 100% Japanese atmosphere. the hostess, receive me kindly and she also brought me to my place in the sushi bar. I chose the six-course speciality menu with sukiyaki and a little ebi tempura to go with the aperitif. After I had ordered, it turned out that the oil for the ebi tempura could not be fast at temperature so that they would use it after curs 2 in the menu. I wouldn't say I liked it, but I didn't make a problem. the small salat of seetang and gurke as the 1st plate was super good! very tasteful. but then I got curs 2, the yakitori and the EBI-Tempura at the same time. two hot dishes at once. I asked if they could serve the yakitori after I finished the other. my server was also upset that it was served at the same time, so no problem. the ebi was good, but not as it should be, and for the price asked, they expect an excellent ebi tempura. the yakitori, on the other hand, was very juicy and the sauce was very well flavored. the suimono was good, but the sashimi afterwards, like the 4th curs, was moderate and much too cold. the chefs had already cut the sashimi and then put back in an too cold refrigerator. the beautiful to sit on a sushi bar is that after the chef has made the sashimi, he can serve them immediately so that they can enjoy the fresh taste optimally. at this point I changed from the chablis to a glass of red wine recommended to go with the main course to the sukiyaki. the weeping was completely no combination with the court, and the court itself was very bad; it had nothing to do with the aromes they usually taste with such a dish. the meat was too hard. I asked the server after billing and made clear that I thought the quality of food is far below the point, in consideration of the prices they asked. he said he agreed to my results and offered to take the menu bowls out of the bill. I thought that was very correct and reasonable. next time I'm in hamburg, I'll go back there, and hopefully they'll show me what they can really do. 3 stars and hopefully next time 5.
An unbelievable experience. Really high class cuisine paired with a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere. It is like taking a trip to Japan itself. Wonderfully designed furnitures, traditional Japanese decorations and a nice and comfortable service. Indeed it is expensive but it's absolutely worth it. From...Sushi to Sukiyaki-everything is a top-notch experience. Just combine it with the outstanding tea and you have a wonderful experience that won't be forgotten.
We had the traditional menu which was a Little bit disappointing because everything was o.k. but not more than that we missed the Spirit of the sophisticated japanese kitchen
REASON FOR VISIT Business lunch with a colleague who claims this is the best Japanese spot in town. FOOD (15€ for a lunch menu with tip) I had a tonkatsu pork lunch menu which comes with a miso soup to start you off, then a...massive bowl with rice and a breadcrumbed pork. You also get some sort of mini mini salad and cabbage. The tonkatsu also comes with a sauce on the side that you can add or you can find soya on the tables too. Everyone receives free complimentary green tea. Generally speaking, I thought the food was very good, especially for a lunch menu. However I would say this is slightly more expensive than other Asian places around. You pay more for a good service and cool setting. Their a la carte menu seems to be much more expensive also. STAFF/SERVICE Nice and polite staff, nothing more to say. Service was very rapid and efficient. You can pay by card and everyone pays at the counter on their way out. ATMOSPHERE/LOCATION This is a hidden gem, I walked past this place on Colonnaden many times and never saw the entry: basically there is just a sign on the street and you need to go up some stairs before seeing this really authentic cool Japanese setting. The decoration is traditional Japanese and the seats/tables are very comfy. You also have the option of sitting at the bar directly. CONCLUSION. I RECOMMEND AND WOULD RETURN
The authentic jaapanese restaurant. Corses very well prepared, beautiful for the eyes but fresh enough to overcome the beauty besides the tasty. Nice environment and very good service
