Hard Antler Bar Restaurant - Haast

Found a “retro” hunter’s cafe off a highway towards fox glacier. Their deco is quite humorous. Lots of trophies. Food was quite good.

Whitebait meal was sublime. Chips were nicely seasoned and cooked to perfection. Generous serving of salad and a beer to wash it down. Daughter was less impressed with her seafood basket and wished she ordered the whitebait.

Perfect stopover for road trip, plenty of parking spaces for your vehicle. They have quite a number of tables inside too. The deco is so unique and we love how this place is. Clean washroom too Their fish and chip is must have, fresh fish with no fishy taste (partner hates fish but full of praise for this one) doesn’t feel greasy from the batter after many bites, portion is wow good. Love their fries, that’s how fries should be made chunky ones. Soup of the day was tomato and herb, it’s very good we taste nothing close to this before. It’s thicker than usual soup leaning towards purée and served piping hot. The soup is so good we empty the bowl. A pity we can’t pass by again for this trip, hope to make it again for these. Warm friendly service staff!

Natural lunch stop if you are moving from south to west or the other way. super friendly and polite staff who go the extra mile. food portions are enormous for the average Asian and the steak is very good.

Dropped by for lunch when I was driving through Haast. Very interesting interior design with all of the antlers up for display and friendly customer service. I ordered the fish burger, which was really delicious. Also, I loved that they seasoned their chips with what I think was salt, pepper and cilantro. It made it all that much tastier. I definitely recommend checking this place out if you’re in the area.
