in how we live, we know most of them: but these are we definitiw one of the best restaurants in the city! small, humble design but cozy despite its location under the floor level: but eating is absolutely great, creatiw, modern and with fair trips. View all feedback.
It was a wonderful Saturday evening in Speisekammer. After having heard and read positive reviews, we decided to give it a try as we live around the corner and we were not disappointed. The chef combines common ingredients in an unusual way: a little bit...soja sauce and fennel in a beef broth, sweet pepper sauce to a choco cake, peanuts with smashed potatoes and even espresso to pork turn a classical dish into a firework of taste and aromas. You can choose a 3-, 4- or 6-course menu for a price of 35, 39 and 49 euro accordingly. Vegetarian option is possible. The price range is very reasonable knowing the fact that this restaurant has just won its first toque (Haube) and was rated 13 points out 20 by Gault Millau. We went for a 6-course surprise menu: we've seen just the list of ingredients that give a hint what was to come our way in the next few hours. Our wish to replace a few ingredients was easily accepted. The chef and another owner of this place serve the dishes themselves and it could not be better! The chef explains what has inspiried him by this dish, shares the secret of the aromas, did his best to make the guest feel happy. You notice they give their heart to the restaurant. It creates a warm atmosphere. Just around 7 tables there guarantees no crowds and a cosy evening. No fancy dress code. Leisure style. The interiour is quite minimalistic with wooden tables and a few drawings on the wall. No music. Your sences concentrate on the food. And it is good this way. It was a nice acquaintance and we will be back again!
Restaurant discovered for it is registered as Bib Gourmet in the Michelin Guide (which means gourmet menus at affordable prices). The dining room itself is simplistic, you really feel the here what matters is the food. I don 't think there is any music either, can 't...remember. The menu is very simple: a menu classic with 3 dishes, a menu degustation with 3 or 4 dishes and finally a surprise menu with 6 dishes (50€, no drinks included). The ingredients composing the surprise menu are listed so that any allergies may be noted down and I am pretty sure the cook would imagine easily a substitution dish in case it is necessary. The 4 of us chose the surprise menu, and it was indeed surprising: a lot of austrian dishes with a modern twist, quantities and spices well balanced, it felt just right at the end of the meal. The wines are not included but there is quite a diversity of choice and no one will look at you badly if you decide to go for tap water. I liked very much that our waiter (who I suspect was more than a waiter) took time to explain us every dish and the idea behind its composition. After one of the guests saying he was still hungry after 5 dishes, he brought us an extra dish from another menu at no additional cost. It is really a nice place to have grant food, and no need to be dressed up or anything: people go there because they want to taste the food. Do book in advance by internet.
