We opted for takeaway slices of banana bread, berry and yogurt cake, and carrot cake. To our delight, all three were delicious—light, fluffy, and perfectly balanced in sweetness. The banana bread was our favorite. We can't wait to go back and sample their wide selection of cakes, muffins, tarts, macaroons, and pastries!
This cafe boasts a lovely atmosphere, featuring rustic wooden chairs and repurposed timber tables inside, along with a creatively transformed dumpster serving as their outdoor seating area. The service is friendly, efficient, and patient while you take your time selecting from an array of tempting cakes, muffins, brownies, and cookies. We tried the carrot cake, which was perfectly balanced and generously portioned, paired with a great cup of coffee. We highly recommend James St Bakery.
We visited for breakfast, and I opted for the cheesy toast with poached bacon, while KD chose the classic avocado and feta combination, both paired with coffee. The coffee was Genovese, one of my long-time favorites (I used to buy beans directly from the factory on Moreland Road), and it was perfectly strong for the mug-sized serving I needed. It's also great for those who prefer almond or soy milk, as I've found this blend doesn’t separate or curdle like some more acidic coffees (such as Vittoria). My cheesy toast was delicious, and the bacon was of excellent quality, making the meal even more enjoyable. Please note that this cafe has set breakfast and lunch hours, so early brunchers will need to stick to the breakfast menu (available until 11 am) and late brunchers will have to choose from the lunch menu (starting at 11 am). I didn't check how flexible these times might be.
Probably one of my fave places to eat in Geelong. The staff are so friendly it’s almost a crime, and the food is so worth every dollar.<br/ <br/ The atmosphere is great, with the occasional mother’s club having their monthly discussion about the retirement newsletter, as well as the occasional middle aged man reading a Bryce Courtney novel.<br/ <br/ Honestly, I highly recommend this cosy cafe.
What it lacks in atmosphere it more than makes up for in its food. Slightly hushed, revered environment (lots of wood and carpeted floors so focus is on the eats rather than the clientele : Slightly pricey but then large portions doughy bread filled to capacity for sandwiches (door stops! and the prosciutto, beetroot feta salad delicious. And those cakes .... With a general avoidance of cream in the cakes, they taste as good as they look. That raspberry white chocolate bread butter pudding (top right in image was light, fluffy, divine and a large portion was very welcome!
