Nestled in Lytham, Whelan's Fish & Chips has garnered mixed reviews from patrons. While some diners praise the fresh, delicious fish and light batter, with generous portions and good value, others recount frustrating experiences marked by poor service and subpar food quality. Soggy chips and mushy peas have disappointed several, while a few highlight the restaurant's inviting atmosphere and commendable staff, particularly in their care for elderly customers. Despite a streak of unsatisfactory visits, many loyal customers maintain their fondness for this establishment, asserting it as a staple in their culinary adventures.

Was Pubbistro1 at Whelans a mag?
Called I'm for a Family of 4 for our Lancashire Fish n Chip Experience Had a quick look at the restaurant but decided because it appeared to be quite dark and no atmosphere we would have a takeaway. 4 Fish&Chips with side order of 2 mushy Peas Came to £40. Which was excellent. Whelans Lytham did not disappoint. View all feedback.
What PNEPete dislikes about Whelans:
Visited a couple of times recently, had 1 large haddock chips and mushy peas 1 regular haddock and chips in restaurant. All cooked to perfection, however fish was greasy both times, this could be avoided if the fat was shaken off the fish when... View all feedback.
We have been coming here for years and enjoy the food. Main reason for posting a review is to compliment the waitress who served us tonight for the way she helped a very elderly customer who was on the next table. The gentleman was struggling with his mobility and also his hearing which meant he needed a lot of time and patience. He was treated with a great deal of respect and empathy which was great to see.
Very disappointed, food very average and pale. Very dark in the restaurant, young staff require customer service training. They all look mistable and not engaging at all. Felt everything was too much trouble. Wont be going again despite having been on a few occasions
This restaurant is terrible. It has possibly the worst service I have ever experienced. The waitress was exceptionally rude, barely spoke and just grunted at us. The chips were greasy and there was more batter than fish. The peas were cold and mushy. Do not waste your money here.
Visited today and had special x 2. Beautiful thick pieces of cod in light batter, chips, mushy peas, fresh bread, and 2 pots of coffee that held 2 cups each, freshly cooked and piping hot. Delicious and cooked to perfection. Great service and a warm welcome too. Would definitely visit again.
A friend had told me about this restaurant as she new we were going for the day. What a total disappointment ... I should have read the recent reviews. There was a strange aroma when we went in which I found slightly off putting and my 8 year old was very vocal. We sat downstairs which had an odd set up of some large long tables. I found it odd that you could purchase a takeaway and eat it upstairs (we didn't venture up there). The food came very quickly and was hot. We ordered a kids sausage and chips and I went for the fish special. The chips were ok, bread was not the best quality but passable, the mushy peas were tastless, the tea was wet ... BUT the fish/batter was disgusting. It smelt as if the batter had SOURED and gone off. I only managed to eat a small bit from both ends before feeling sick. The aroma was off putting. The fish was very moist and spongy in texture. The batter was slightly undercooked but I don't think this was the main issue. I passed a comment and complained when I paid but all that was said was we would have put it back in the fryer ... I'm not a fussy eater and will eat most things (I even asked to take away my daughters chips which she didn't eat).
