When you want AUTHENTIC food and are in the right place you know it! Look past the rather old/bland decor and tables. Nevermind the crowds of locals sipping their beers while gossiping or complaining about politics and sport. Don't worry about the people not speaking your language. Remember, this is THEIR country, THEIR heritage and language. When you want authentic you want the locals, the basic look and feel and most importantly the food that locals are accustomed to. If you want to be treated to some high priced copy elsewhere then don't come here. Otherwise this place is just pure AWSEOME! I am of Portuguese heritage, I love my North American diet but I can say without doubt that this is TRULY AUTHENTIC and you gotta eat here!
Just a couple streets up from the main tourist drag and Funchal starts getting much quieter and more local. We found Restaurante Paragem and really enjoyed our dinner. Delicious steak Espetada, my vegetarian wife got a mushroom omelette, and we both had some delicious poncha and bolo do caco for starters. This gigantic platter of fries came out to accompany our mains, apparently gratis. So good! And reasonably priced, unlike the tourist traps down below selling pizza and other tourist food
