One of my favorite cafe's in Freiburg, Cafe Ruef has a nice mixture of indoor/outdoor seating and pastries, along with freshly -baked bread and coffee. I stayed at a hostel nearby and found it to be the best place to spend an early morning before the caffeine kicks in.
Café Ruef is a really lovely and cozy place. We wanted to try the food and booked a table for six. Online reservations were only available in the bar area, but after inquiring, we were told that eating in the bar area was no problem at all. When we arrived, a table had indeed been reserved for us at the counter – it wasn't quite the cozy gathering we had envisioned. A very attentive waiter quickly noticed our confusion and freed up a table for us in the dining room. That was great! Unfortunately, the food wasn't what we expected given the prices. The appetizer arrived with the main courses, the pasta was very average, and the pizza was basically a tarte flambée. Overall, we still had a nice evening and finished with a delicious Schröder (a local beer). However, I wouldn't eat at Ruef again, but I'll continue to come for the drinks.
I love ruef, great cocktails and a good drinks menu, with a special atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food has become very expensive these days!! Portions are very small and simply way too expensive for that. The name pizza is also misleading. Very thin, small, and essentially a flammuchère.
We were warmly welcomed by the waiter (without a reservation). He went out of his way to find us a table. We then enjoyed a delicious meal: the starter and main course were excellent!
The food is delicious but very expensive. To fill you up, you need the large tarte flambée, but that's expensive... Then, unfortunately, I had to wait another hour for the food, which was then on another table and a piece was swapped... That's a no-go! So, second but last time for me.
