Charlie's Cafe - Freeport

My wife and I just stopped here for lunch before heading back home. It was pretty busy. The sign said to seat ourselves. There were.no tables open, but all the seats at the counter were open so we sat there. We figured there would be a wait and we were ok with that, but at least four different employees walked by us without acknowledging us or saying a word. Not so much as a 'Hello ' or 'someone will be right with you. Each one looked at us and walked by. After about five minutes of feeling invisible, we got up and left. Noone seemed to notice. They clearly didn 't need or want our business.

Make sure you get the caramel rolls on your way out

Waitress was most attentive, friendly and helped with suggestions and menu selection. We were there for lunch, about 1:30PM. We could have ordered from the breakfast menu, but may have been early for dinner menu as posted specials started at 4PM. I found the lunch menu selections just average. Burgers, fries, chicken strips, BLT, tuna sandwich. It was so similar to bar food menu that I was disappointed. I had chicken strips and fries. The fries were not hot, and texture was mealy. I had a cup of beef and dumpling soup thinking this would meet my expectations of home cooked food, it did not, and there were no dumplings, and soup was just lukewarm. Fries were Similar to bargain frozen fries from grocery store and heated in my oven. I've ate at Charlie's years ago and was expecting better. They had Hot Beef commercial plate, and chicken and BBQ ribs with vegetables, but it didn't look appealing on plates near us. But Would have preferred more lunch sandwich choices, like pastrami, Reuben, Rachel etc. We had the chicken topped lettuce salad and it too was just ok. Chopped iceberg and a few bits of chicken. Again the waitress did a good job. Parking: Multiple spots on main Street.
