What Emilia Stiedemann doesn't like about Lighthouse Picnics:
I would not recommend this to anyone! We paid almost $90 Canadian for four ham sandwiches two small salads and two desserts. Plus the restaurant has changed it’s process, now the lunch is delivered by van and you pick it up at the dock and...carry it your self up to to lighthouse. I would recommend packing your own lunch and enjoy the spectacular view from the lighthouse property. View all feedback.
The final km or so is on uneven unpaved road. This is followed by a 15 minute hike. Awesome views. Lots of whales. Very tasty and plentiful lunch!
Absolutely spectacular experience. All natural freshly made food (salad, sandwich, dessert and fresh squeezed lemonade). You are provided a blanket and then find a beautiful spot to enjoy a relaxed picnic and watch the whales. There is a fairly long walk to the lighthouse but worth every step. You must book ahead and make reservations.
Great ambience and greater food! Molasses bread sandwiches piled high with tasty ingredients, salad and your choice of scrumptious deserts washed down with lemonade.
We almost didn't get the reservation, but we are so glad it worked out. There seemed to be confusion about parking. People walked from before the dirt road, but you can actually drive about 5-8 minutes on the dirt road to get to a parking lot. The parking lot is right before a VERY narrow (for cars) path between two beaches. There is a sign saying not to pass, so if you get there, you know you've hit the right parking lot. From there, you walk about 15 minutes to the lighthouse on a pretty easy path with just a slight hill. Once at the lighthouse, you chose from a few sandwich options. You then got your basket with sandwiches, orzo, and your choice of dessert, plus homemade lemonade. You can sit inside, but we preferred outside, even though it was a foggy day. They provided a blanket and we found a spot hidden against a rock. We loved it so much. You have as much time as you want to hang out. Your reservation time only refers to when you get your food, since they have such a small operation and limited hands. Definitely would do this again!
Everything about this picnic was incredible, it was the highlight of our trip to Newfoundland!! You first drive up a gravel road to the parking area, then it is a 10-15min scenic walk to get to the lighthouse. Beautiful views of the ocean and coastline, and we were lucky enough to have 2 large icebergs close by during our visit! Food was delicious with options for meat lovers and vegetarians. It was too windy for us to eat outside but they still have tables inside to accommodate visitors, very cool to learn about history of the lighthouse and shipwrecks in the area. Make sure to book in advance as we had to shuffle a couple of things around to fit it into our itinerary since it was available when we wanted...totally worth it!!! Overall a great afternoon activity for anyone in the St. John's area!
