Opt for seats on the outdoor patio, sit under a heat lamp or grab a blanket if you're cold, and take in the views of Kettwig. I know it's another beer garden and pub, like so many in Germany, but food here is actually good. Forget about those generic frozen fries (pommes) that other serve up, these fries are thin, crispy, and seasoned. My jager schnitzel was a big portion including a side salad. My only complaint is that my side salad was served on the same plate as my schnitzel and fries, so the salad dressing bled over into the other dishes and mixed with the jager sauce.

From the inside, howe... read more The café is very nicely located. Surrounded by half-timbered houses, on a hillside between the upper and lower old towns of Essen-Kettwig. From the inside, however, the café is neither historically old-fashioned nor modern. Rather, it feels like it's seen better days. The interior is from the 80s or 90s. The staff is very casually dressed (one waitress wore a lounge suit). I'm not necessarily a dress code conscious, but clean, sensible clothing would inspire more confidence. However, the staff were friendly and attentive, which is why it still gets 4 stars. There's a selection of cakes and hot dishes. The portions are good, and the food is okay. But the cake, in any case, isn't as special as the place would suggest. It's tasty, but it's not mind-blowing.
