There is not too much choice on the menu which can make it difficult if you prefer a vegetarian dinner. Matching good wine can make this also a fun place to just sit and chat with a friend

The concept is the same: Sma... read more We visited for our wedding anniversary and had made a reservation before-hand. Since our last visit the Esscafe has changed owners. The concept is the same: Small-ish menu, everything freshly prepared in the kitchen area which is part of the restaurant.The new owners have re-decorated - gone are all the photos and memorabilia and it's very much a clean slate. The menu had a couple of additional items on it. My wife ordered a risotto, I had an anti-pasto plate and a main. As everything is made to order we were prepared for a wait — plenty of time to chat and watch the food being prepared. Service seems to be in the learning/ramp-up phase still, empty bottles were piling up in the kitchen area and just occasionally shifted. The anti-pasto plate used to be a dish with bits and pieces contributing different tastes and usually combining to well-rounded experience - unfortunately, this time it was all more or less a bitter tasting and not at all a well-rounded dish. My wife's risotto unfortunately was rather burned and not really pleasant to eat. My main dish was OK-ish.All in all: plenty of potential for improvement. Currently I'd hesitate to recommend it.

I made it more spicy for me and the portion is not that big, but I liked the atmosphere next to the (vegan) books. Staff was nice!
