A trip to Garden of the gods State Park wouldn't be complete without a stop to the Red Onion. Easy to find location in Equality Illinois, great food and service, definitely worth the drive if you are in Southern Illinois.

Waited 1 hour for our food. Place was not crowded. Finally inquired about our food. It was brought later and stone cold. Customers around us, who arrived later than us, had their food, ate and were leaving. We still waited. Called manager, who refused to make amends about, or making it right. We will never return. This is the 2nd time this has happened to us. We used to be frequent customers. NO MORE! Our advice, do not dine at this place. We heard they were going to permanently close. GOOD IDEA! Jeff Humm

The Haystack Burger was great. The bread they offer is similar to King's Hawaiian Bread. Very good. Lots of cool photos of the history of the mines and Cave-In-Rock. Service: Dine in Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Finally got the time to stop and try it out! Wonderful hostess that makes you feel like family! My husband I got there right before the church rush. I'm so glad, because it was flooded with people after we were seated. Our server was very sweet and helpful with our order, since it was our first time. We both got the chicken fried steak. My husband's 3 side choices were the broccoli cheese casserole, 7-layer salad, and the poppy seed chicken casserole (highly recommended by our server. My sides were cheesy potatoes, poppy seed chicken casserole, and fried okra. As we waited for our order, they give you a loaf of hot bread and strawberry butter which is delicious!!! The food took about 30-45 minutes, but it's definitely worth it!!! Everything was hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious! Cheesy potatoes were so creamy, super cheesy, and perfectly seasoned! What turned out to be my favorite was the poppy seed chicken casserole!!!! Omgsh it's loaded with chicken, poppy seeds, a creamy sauce, and a breadcrumb topping!! AMAZING! The fried okra was standard, but good. I usually have to add salt or pepper to something, but I didn't have to add ANYTHING! The chicken fried steak was awesome, perfectly seasoned, and they put a perfect amount of milk gravy on it. Everything was hands down, delectable! My followers/readers know how I can be very particular I will pick up on any bad practices or content. I can only tell you that you must give this place a shot!! Excellent meal and excellent staff!!!!
