Rode 260 miles for a Gunderburger Well worth the trip. Four of us went on a bike tour of Milwaukee, WI grab our lips around the legendary Gunderburger. It's really a gastronomic ride of the passage. We'll do it again next summer. Worth the trip. View all feedback.
What Linda E doesn't like about The Irish Shanty:
Came 70 miles for the Friday fish, it used to be excellent, but was not good this time, also was cold inside, needed to wear my coat. Need to make fish like it used to be, or will not come back. View all feedback.
The Shanti is an icon in Northeast Iowa. Don't let the small town of Gunder fool you make a reservation here on the weekends to be sure that you get a seat! The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and they work so hard to keep up with the busy crowds. The menu includes a variety of sandwiches, burgers, and dinners. The Gunder Burger is what the Shanti is known for, but all of the food is good. Serving sizes are plentiful. I always tend to order the hashbrowns as my side dish, and love to get them smothered in cheese. Daily specials are posted on the board inside the door, so be sure to take a look when you walk in.

You're not living the good life until you've been to the Irish Shanti. It's worth the drive near and far. I came all the way from St. Pete, Florida, myself. Best burgers, plenty of mouth watering cheese curds, and friendly staff. I'll be back.
This place is a must country stop! Serve was down home ! Food was awesome will cooked and thoughtful! Ranch dressing is home made! Atmosphere was delightful too!!!
I really enjoy visiting Gunder whenever I 'm in the area. Kevin, the owner, is friendly and lively. Norma bakes the best homemade bread. I 've had the Gunderburger, the cod sandwich, ribeye steak sandwich, prime rib sandwich special, reuben, and the southern fried chicken. All of the food has been delicious and unique though I 'm hard pressed to choose a favorite they 're all that good. It 's well worth the trip. The Irish Shanti is located on Gunder Road as you head out of Elkader (turn left at Dollar General). It 's not far from the Big Spring Trout Hatchery. Gunder is convenient to Claremont, Postville, Elkader, West Union, Elgin, etc... It 's easy to find. Once in town you can 't miss the Irish Shanti... or you 'll miss the whole tiny town. This is a must see whenever you are in the area. I do a lot of fishing in the four county area and try to make sure and pass through Gunder on the way home. You can always count on a great meal of homemade food, very reasonable prices, and terrific service.
