We quite enjoyed our meal here. We had the shredded beef with black bean sauce which was actually very good. The sauce was quite delicious but there wasn't much meat mostly vegetables. We also had the garlic gai lan which were ok but not my favorite. The garlic flavor was not very strong and some tasted a bit burnt. Went to dinner with a group of friends and pre-ordered some items in addition to ordering more in person. Some confirmed preorder items (short ribs and shrimp balls) never arrived. In addition, the fish and tiger prawn didn’t seem fresh, they were cold when they were served. The vegetables were over cooked. Visit: July 2023As one of the few HK style restaurants in Edmonton, I really like this place. I like the atmosphere and the food available. I ordered the J23 (fried rice with cream and tomato sauce). The cream sauce was a bit too viscous for my preference, but had a mild flavor and the shrimp was perfectly cooked. It played well in contrast to the tart tomato taste of the other sauce. The chicken was good in that sauce as well. I found myself going between the two sauces constantly and it gave a good variety to the eating experience. Expect long waits during peak meal times. But it's worth it because it's the very few restaurants in Edmonton that serves HK styled food. The food does come quick once you ordered. They are efficient in serving you and turn over tables really fast. Just do everyone a favour and be quick in deciding and ordering your meals, eat quick and don't linger around chit chatting. Just order, eat and go. You will let everyone else have a chance to enjoy.
Heard good things about Hong Kong Café so I decided to try. Food was disappointing: I ordered the beef brisket curry lo mein, the beef was tasty but only came with 3 to 4 small pieces, the noodles were clumped together (not pulled apart), it was cold, and not mixed properly. Mentioned to the staff, they took it back to heat it back up but didn't care to re-mix the noodles. The service wasn't the best, we waited over 20 minutes before we were able to flag down a waiter. Albeit, they were busy as it was a Saturday during lunch hour, but there is a point where busy cannot be an excuse, especially when food quality suffers like this. Maybe best to visit during non-busy hours.
It’s a little bit pricer than other Chinese food restaurant, but not by much. So definitely worth it. I would recommend to my friends and family.
