one of the best eclairs I had in edinburgh. the baguette is also beautiful and makes for great little sandwich. everything was fresh and the staff was nice. Maybe a bit overpriced View all feedback.
What Viewlander doesn't like about La Barantine:
Good reputation at the other branch. Turned up at 4.03 and was turned away as takeaway only. Suggested they put words to that effect on door but the staff member didn’t seem to welcome any polite feedback. There are better places with better attitudes nearby View all feedback.
The service is excellent, the coffee is perfect, and the French pastries are authentic in a charming and comfortable atmosphere. What else could you ask for?
I usually come to this restaurant for a coffee and a treat, but this time, I was disappointed. The apricot tart I ordered had a soft, possibly old, chewy crust that was hard to cut through. A good French patisserie should have a crisp, fresh crust that is ready to bite into. Unfortunately, it seems difficult to find a great French dessert shop here, as people seem to accept whatever they are served. Too much sugar and an aged crust can diminish the quality of the pastries. However, the coffee is good and the fruit tarts are tasty. The restaurant is small yet comfortable and not as busy as the one on Victoria Street.

Nothing remarkable, missing a trick to capitalise on the French theme rather than any other cafe you may visit. The staff there were very kind with a quiet yet cheerful disposition. Prices are to be expected for Edinburgh with the baked items being a bit more premium. The coffee was pleasant enough but a rather small cup size so I was a bit disappointed. Overall I'd say that this little place is an absolute gem in regards to all the amazing bakes on offer. But as a cafe I feel like it could be improved.
I had a great first visit to this restaurant. We ordered the sandwich of the day, which was a delicious baguette filled with blue cheese, bacon, tomato, chicken, and honey mustard. We also tried the quiche Lorraine, which was served with a rocket, tomato, and parmesan salad. The food was tasty, although the salad was a bit dry. I didn't try any pastries, but they looked amazing. The service was good and the restaurant, although small, was functional.
Arrived at lunchtime, a few tables were taken and one was reserved. However a couple were leaving so we were asked to wait outside while table was sanitised. We ordered a sandwich ,coffee and cake. We were served quickly and I must say the sandwich was big enough to share and was lovely.coffee was nice and my friend had the chocolate éclair and loved it. All in it cost about £16, which for stockbridge area is OK. We found it a little chilly but the door was ajar due to covid.
