This was a great whole in the wall Colombian restaurant. We are Colombian and we're very excited to try this place. We ordered several items on the menu and all were delicious! They even have a small grocery store with frozen premade food such as arepas, tamales and empeñadas. We loaded up and took some home. I was barely able to fit everything in the freezer. It's a hit far in Mesa but worth the trip. We will make t... View all feedback.
What Elena N doesn't like about La Tiendita Abarrotes Al Estilo Mexicano:
Today was my second visit to this little Colombian restaurant. It was early and only ordered an arepa con queso and a 'house ' coffee. All was well until the little German pests crawled across the floor. The woman sitting by the corner where the bugs scattered to called the waitress and pointed them out. The waitress grab a couple napkins, scooped them up with her hand, and went about her business. I had only two bit... View all feedback.
Western Union service was down and no one picked up the phone when I tried calling ahead of time so I wouldn't waste time driving there. Wasted trip and gas going there and waiting in line only to find out their Western Union service wasn't working. Wonderful
Well lets just say the food has no flavor, it is easy to tell that either the cook its not Colombian or the cook has lost its passion for cooking Colombian food. The bandeja paisa was served without avocado and the beans were just bland in taste. The encebollado, same thing very very bland. I think what threw me off the most was the terrible smell around the ENTIRE restaurant of mold!!! Super bad smell. I think they have a big issue with the bathrooms.
It had been a few years that I had been there and went back today since I was in the neighborhood. Not sure what was going on inside the restaurant but I walked out immediately because the smell was unbearable. Not sure how to explain it but as soon as I walked in it smelled like I walked into a public bathroom, maybe the cleaning product that they use or not sure exactly what it was. It did not smell like a restaurant. Im sure the food is probably good but was not going to stick around to find out. It's unfortunate that they lost my business because of the lack of effort on cleaning the place.
Potential, yes. Tons of potential. Does this establishment try to sell a decent, authentic tasting, and authentic looking version of Colombian food? Yes and no, it's complicated. It all depends on whom you ask. For an outsider, this food is tasty and seems home cooked, somewhat. For a Colombian, the bandeja paisa lacked flavor (sazón). The bandeja left a ton to be desired. The ahi that I was given was old, stale, and the cilantro inside the ahi was funky smelling and tasting. Can they do better? Yes. Now will they? The answer is no. Owners simple will do what is profitable, with little if any regard of what their customers really want. This is a business to make money. Owners sell an inferior product and they know it. Good luck changing their old stubborn ways. Move over, and take your hard earned dollars elsewhere. Good riddance.
This place is amazing!! The food was delicious, definitely remained me of the original Colombian flavors
