The Old Thorns is a large hotel and golf club, so you would expect the Kings Restaurant to have a high-quality menu. Unfortunately, when my friends and I dined there, the only option available was a carvery. I was disappointed as I had hoped to try the steak that was advertised on their website. To top it off, the coffee was served in simple white cups without saucers, which was surprising for a supposed 5-star restaurant. Perhaps it was because we visited on a weekday when the menu is limited, but we left feeling disappointed and may not return in the future.
We went to a quiet time of the year on a middle week stay, so just a few choices of meat, but many choices of veg and side.
During my three-night stay at Old Thorns, I dined in the carvery one evening. While I enjoy a carvery, having the same option every night became monotonous. The experience was average at best, with a limited selection of three meats (excluding beef, which is only available on Sundays). The vegetables were underwhelming and lacked seasoning. Although everything was cooked well, the overall lack of choice and flavor left much to be desired.
