Returning to Sudbury from Barrie when we stopped for breakfast. The lady who served us was very pleasant and we ordered the full breakfast. Although a party of six boys and a few couples had come in the service was very good as was the food .. Plenty of sausage, bacon and hash browns. Really good value for money and will be calling again.

The waitress was very pleasant and put up with our giddiness as our small group got psyched up to go canoe camping in nearby Killarney Park. They had a variety of breakfast specials. I asked for poached eggs. We don't do that, she said. I ordered scrambled. I got a perfectly folded omelette, with perfectly cut fries and greaseless sausages. These are hints we need to watch for. There is no cook-from-scratch capacity in such places. The eggs, folded in omelette ready for reheat and serve, are from low-cost smashed eggs that make it cheaper to contract out the cooking than hire local people to learn the work of cooking. It is a job drain the northern Ontario economy does not need.In my ebook Food for City Building, I argue that food is the next new job creator for Ontario, following several generations of jobs based in resources and semi-skilled manufacturing. That's why I have a bee in my bonnet about this.Contracting out restaurant work not only adds to the miles food has travelled, with resulting pollution, and not only reduces the healthful vitality of fresh foods, it is a job-killer that small towns can't afford. The local town should use its economic development office to boost home cooking in this village; you'll see a huge increase in the numbers who stop by for a meal and help build up this town.
