I have been eating here for lunch and dinner for over 20 years. Great food, authentic Cantonese cooking, good prices. Their lunch menu is especially a bargain for the quality and amount you get. View all feedback.
What makmak doesn't like about Hong Kong Chef:
tried their lunch special 3 times so far and each time has been pretty mediocre. prices arent bad but you get what you pay for. might need to try something other than their lunch special if i ever try them again. def not ordering their chicken dishes that isnt fried. its always rubbery and funky. i ate half of it and wasted the rest. Just mehhh. I don 't really like any of the local Downey Chinese spots. They all have a similar smell to them, something about these old buildings. The orange chicken actually wasn 't that bad, but maybe abnormal to what you 'd expect. I like the chicken they use. The orange chicken tasted mostly of juice, was a light sour sauce. Nothing spicy, I maybe even liked the chicken. The pepper beef was not for me. All the meat was pink, which is maybe okay if you are familiar with a place. Had I known, I would have asked for it more well done. Every bite pink is new for me and Chinese food. Maybe I could have overlooked it, but they were so chewy it might as well have been bubblegum. Flavor wise, okay, but meat was off putting and would never order again. Threw out the soup. I. Hate. Corn. In. Egg. Drop. Maybe it 's personal preference, but it was also like bits of corn... Chopped, like not even full kernels. It all tasted of corn, was meh. I like a nice dark, yellow, eggy egg drop. I don 't think I would come back here, just not my type of Chinese.
It was a great place for at least 30 years, but it's horrible now. I remember when lunch was $4.95 and every item was awesome. Like I said, it's horrible now. If you ate here 5 years ago, you know what I'm talking about.
Horrible experience super salty food and greasy. I will never go back there. The orange chicken was hard and the chicken dry. No AC hole in the wall

The food is great at this place but if you are eating for lunch and it’s not over 20 bucks they don’t take cards only Cash because of some merchant fee… That’s the reason I stop going the minimum fee use to be 10 bucks but they hiked it up and not worth it anymore ??
