Walked from Canterbury to Dover (first leg of the Via Francigena) this week with my two sisters stopped at this pub in Shepherdswell. In fact stopped twice (at the end of our first day the beginning of our second day walking. Both times the bar staff, as well as the customers, couldn’t have been more welcoming friendly. It really was a pleasant break. Although they don’t serve food, if you phone ahead of time, then y... View all feedback.
What andrewmA357YB doesn't like about The Bell:
I received an unfriendly welcome when I was told that my muddy boots were not welcome, so I took them off. Despite the nice interior, I was informed that they did not serve any food. The staff appeared annoyed when I didn't have the right change, and when I was searching for the restroom, they did not offer any help. However, the selection of crisps was very good. I do not plan on returning to this restaurant. View all feedback.
Unwelcoming, not a happy atmosphere, no food available, not even a basic ploughmans lunch. The landlady seemed not to care either way whether or not we all stayed or left! Very odd for such a lovely pub.
I first visited this pub in 2011 and returned in 2016 on a recent visit to the pretty village of Shepherdswell to find a new licensee has taken over. It used to be a wonderful pub. However sadly not anymore. Whilst being served on a busy village event which was raking in a good days taking, the Landlady was rude to a couple of hikers passing through who just asked for water. I returned two months later. No tables free and one had a load of children's toys on the table with no one sitting there and children running amok was not suitable. I won't be returning and instead have found more hospitable and cleaner pubs nearby. Such a shame.
Complained about beer that tastes bleachy landlady argued that all her customers liked it and she was the landlady what customers?! Saturday night and no one there! She then asked us to leave. Avoid this pub I am a local and will sharing my experience what a daft woman! Try the Wrong Turn at Barfrestone or the Carpenters at Coldred where they understand great customer experience!
Decently served beer, but food frozen and microwaved. Not welcoming to strangers and visitors. Surly landlady.
Visited recently, everything seemed too much trouble by the blonde waitress who was clearly drunk and didn't seem to want to work there. We ordered drinks and she tutted that I stop her being on her phone and talking to someone at the end of the bar. We then needed an extra lemonade and she rolled her eyebrows and shook her head, I didn't want to spend another penny in there but unfortunately we had friends there too and was too late to change venue, I will never visit again, it's a shame as the landlady was lovely, really let down by a blonde lady with glasses, we then ordered the same drinks again and it was a totally different price to the first time. She's got to go
