Freshest tomato and tuna salad I've come across, at great price of €9. Filet steak with pimentos and freshly fried potatoes chips €8. Nice glass of cava €3. We ate in the restaurant, but they also have a great pintxos bar, which was packed with locals and really buzzing. They welcome tourists. Can thoroughly recommend. Escolta Real 4, San Sebastián.

We were so impressed on our first lunch visit that we followed up with a second: Fried hake €13) grilled cod €9.50) and squid €9.50) – cooked to perfection by chef Maria Jose Urdaueta, who oversees a kitchen producing food that is infinitely superior to any of the more celebrated old town restaurants. Super wine list €10 to €35 a bottle) combined with really lovely service under the gaze of owner Jose Antonio Bolerdi, makes this an irresistible, authentic experience. Marvellous.
