I didn't have high expectations since I was the only one in the restaurant, but the meal was surprisingly excellent. The dishes were fresh and well presented. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I would love to come back again. View all feedback.
What Verlie Schmitt doesn't like about Al Raj:
Recent take away from this new restaurant was really poor. mins to deliver and two prompting phone calls later it arrived . The curries were really poor (one chicken and one vegetable)the sauces tasted like gravy -little fresh spice was evident , the...popadoms were cold and soggy. Such a shame as the Al Raj was really great! I've had better curry sauce in local chip shops. This is not even close to Contemporary Indi... View all feedback.
The food was a little expensive and very spicy. The service felt a bit rushed, but the food was decent. The staff were quick to close the restaurant after we finished paying.

I made a reservation over a week in advance by phone. I went on a Wednesday night deal which included popadoms, a starter, main course, and either rice or naan for less than ten pounds. The pickle tray was good. The mixed starter was nice but could have used a bit more spice. Both the keema and garlic naans were excellent. The mixed vindaloo had plenty of meat but could have been spicier with the addition of bullet or bird's eye chillies. The waiter was young and brought out the popadoms after the starter. I wasn't offered drinks after the initial order and had to go to the bar myself. I didn't visit the restroom. Overall, the restaurant was clean and small with parking available outside and on and off Danum Road. The deal was good value and I'm glad I tried the restaurant with the offer, as I may have been disappointed if I had paid full price.
Decided to call a takeaway to treat friends in my garden.... we chose the set menu of the chefs choice. The quality was appalling.. . meals were the same and just bland curry and all tepid warm... and very bland rice...if was certainly...not impressive and we waited hours for it to be delivered after being told it was an hour's wait.... Certainly won't be using them again
We chose to come to Spice Lounge as we can walk here from home which meant we could drink too, bonus ! We are a family with year old and year old. The restaurant was spotless and the staff smartly dressed and a...nice ambience. We order poppadums, starters, mains and finished with homemade mango lassi's. we had two bottles of wine and four shorts with mixer plus two child drinks. The bill was which is a complete bargain in my eyes. The food itself was well presented, hot, fresh and delivered at intervals which felt just right. Each of the dishes were tasty and flavoursome, our even had the house devils dish (Naga) and he really enjoyed that. After the food we asked for mango lassi which wasn't actually on the menu and they said they could make it from scratch if we didn't mind waiting. So we did wait and it was absolutely lovely. The waiters couldn't do enough for us and seemed to be doing the same for the other guests. Of course this is not a centre of town restaurant so it lacks a bit of atmosphere, but they re concentrating on the food and cleanliness and they should be praised for that. So, if you like curry and looking for somewhere quiet to go so you can enjoy a great Indian meal, I would recommend this place without question. Enjoy !
