Mars Sidebar

4.2 / 5 (9 reviews)

Description

Mars Sidebar is a stylish downtown Des Moines coffee spot celebrated for excellent espresso and inventive seasonal drinks like the Sputnik and Honey Lavender Latte. Spotlessly clean with attractive design and comfortable seating, it offers pastries, snacks and convenient skywalk access near the convention center and farmers’ market. Service can be slow or uneven due to a small staff, and vegan options are limited; occasional hours/signage confusion has been reported. For many, the high-quality drinks make the wait worthwhile.

Hard to find! Directions sent me to the wrong side of the building. Entrance is on on the corner of 5th St Walnut St.

This is a wonderful spot to grab a morning pick-me-up. The staff is relatively small, so the wait for your drink can occasionally be longer than at Starbucks, especially during peak times. However, the quality of the drinks makes the wait worth it!

I wasn't involved with the original sidebar, but I've noticed significant improvements since it has transformed into the Mars sidebar. I've had positive experiences with the staff there, and I appreciate the interesting seasonal drinks they offer each time, along with a nice selection of pastries and snacks. The seating is comfortable, and its location is convenient right in front of the Skywalks for those working downtown. It's also a great spot to grab coffee during the farmer's market, especially if you want to avoid the crowds and chaos of Java Joe’s. In my experience, their espresso is also much better.

Tasty coffee and food close to the convention center. The struggle finding it is worth it once you find it, you’ll remember it though as another reviewer helpfully notes, it’s in the Capital Square building and its entrance is closer to 5th and Walnut, rather than Locust, though you can get to it from the 5th and Locust entrance.

In my opinion, Mars has the best coffee in downtown Des Moines. The Mars Blend is my way for a simple cup of coffee. The Sputnik or Honey Lavendar-Latte are my favorites when I am in the mood for something spunky.
