The Whippy Dip Decorah, Iowa
Description
Tucked in Decorah, this old-fashioned walk-up ice cream stand is a beloved seasonal stop for families, campers and locals. Its soft-serve, candy-studded tornadoes and famous Keksteig draw steady lines—worth the wait, say regulars—served by friendly, attentive staff. Besides classic cones, shakes and hot dogs, expect a small lot, cash-only service and occasional uneven results from non-ice-cream menu items. Perfect as a nostalgic, post-hike treat on warm evenings.

The food we ordered, including the BBQ Beef Sandwich and Taco in a Bag, was extremely disappointing. The chocolate malt lacked any chocolate or malt flavor, making me question the purpose of this restaurant. My wife's chocolate tornado with Reeces was decent, although it had an overwhelming amount of candy. Despite this, the staff were friendly and attentive.
The Whippy Dip is a most stop for my family when we are back in NE IA during the summer. My kids even ask to go to Whippy Dip. Very affordable and never disappoints
A must-stop shop for a sweet ice cream treat! We enjoyed a twist cone and an M&M with hot five malt. Delicious! There is almost always a line and you need cash, but who doesn't love a local ice cream spot? There is off-street parking, but it is a fairly small lot. They are seasonal so check for hours!
The ice cream here is good, but I do not recommend the cookie dough flavor. It's best to go to Sugar Bowl for a better selection.
