This isn’t a formal, high-end, classic Italian restaurant by any means. It’s an old restaurant with a long history that has passed through multiple generations and served decent food to a variety of appreciative clientele over the years. I’m always taken aback, however, whenever I see televisions and bingo screens prominently displayed for all to see, even those well beyond the bar area. For Cherry Wonderdog, this immediately shot down the notion of Nikki’s being a place to celebrate a special meal. The interior was somber, with a bit of a Godfather feel, and the discolored upholstered benches where we sat could have used new padding twenty years ago. They reminded me of the seats in our town’s historic movie theater, which, until recently, hadn’t been replaced since the 1950s. My tasty Yuengling on draft hit the spot with just the right amount of foam. Priced at below $4, it was a bargain. Our early bird specials seemed like a good deal, too. Each of us started off with a house salad – the kind premade in the morning from a bag of wilted iceberg salad mix and left in the refrigerator for quick distribution that night. My turkey meal was pretty good even though the meat did not feel like it had been cut recently from an actual bird. Similarly, the canned cranberry sauce in a small plastic cup felt cheap. My wife was surprised by the quality of her breaded broiled haddock, but somehow she ended up with a surcharge for an unnecessarily large portion of mashed potato which the server later got approval to remove. In sum, Nikki’s was a very good offering given the price. It would be grossly unfair to compare it against a genuine Italian bistro in NYC costing twice as much. At the same time, it could still benefit from a few upgrades to enhance its product for the local crowd.

I went on a frightening walk to this spot from my soccer game. i can't say the area was nice, and there were limited vegetarian options.
