Yunsa Cafe & Restaurant - Cusco

The food was good. We had mushroom and corn soup, alpaca (boiled over) and lemonade. We also had pisco mad. The price was 45 soles.

Don't come here. The pizza is not cheap, the service really crappy and not a good place in general. The place was empty and we waited for a single pizza for at least one hour. You just don't care

My family and I landed hard in the San Blas neighborhood of Cusco after 5 weeks in the jungle outside of Pucallpa. We knew the altitude sickness or "soroche" might be an issue so we had our pediatrician prescribed meds for our 11 year old, we opted to tough it out. He did great! My wife and I not so much. She was far worse off than me with a pounding headache and dizziness. We laid around the Airbnb we rented most of the day but by early evening we were famished. With our boy bouncing off the walls and ready to explore (gift shops mostly, he's a big fan of chachkis) we headed down the hill into the center of San Blas and the plethora of restaurants to choose from. San Blas, Cusco is the hip part of town, you will overhear English, German, Portuguese, French, Australian you name it, easily as much or more than Spanish. My wife commented that it appeared as if San Blas is where Burners go when Burning Man ends...fairly accurate in my opinion.There were a number of cuisines to choose from. We passed a curry house, Mexican restaurant, an alpaca grill (yes the eat them too) etc. We settled on pizza. We chose Yunsa a tiny little cafe on the Plaza San Blas. Walking in the door you a greeted by a pastry case loaded with empanadas and treats. Just beyond is a large clay wood-fired oven for the pizzas and baked goods. We greeted warmly by the chef and guided up the tiny winding staircase to the upper dining space. We were seated next to a small terrace that looked out on the plaza. I ordered a lemongrass lemonade and my wife settled on coca tea to help ward off the symptoms of soroche. Our boy ordered water and then bounded down the stairs and out into the plaza to make a dent in his 100 Sole ($33 US) spending money. My wife felt a little queasy still and opted for the Cream of Asparagus and Mushroom Soup. I choose a Margherita Pizza on quinoa crust. The food took a little while to arrive but it was more than worth the wait. Her soup was rich but not heavy and fairly complex in flavors. The homemade croutons were delicious. My pizza came and I was stunned by the presentation. The very thin crust was golden brown, fresh plum tomato sliced thin covered the top along with the perfect amount of mozzarella (I think less is more on pizza), a smattering of rough chopped basil completed dish. It was delicious! I loved the crunch of the quinoa crust and the flavors was better than anything I have had at home in Seattle, where we have become very snobby about our pies.Not the cheapest meal but certainly worth it the money. I was disappointed we didn't visit again during our stay in Cusco.
