Description

Cullowhee Café offers hearty, home-style cooking with friendly, attentive staff and affordable prices, making it a beloved local dining spot since the 1960s. Favorites include open-faced sandwiches, stewed beef specials, and unique appetizers like puffs, praised for their comforting flavors. The café efficiently handles large groups, adding to its appeal. However, inconsistent and unpredictable business hours frustrate many patrons, sometimes leading to unexpected closures. Despite occasional service hiccups, the café’s quality food and welcoming atmosphere continue to draw loyal customers, suggesting a bright future if operational consistency improves.

I drove all the way there only to find that it's no longer open, but there's no indication of this online.

The restaurant has been closed for about a month to a month and a half. While some of their prices were reasonable, the cost of a chuckwagon sandwich was $5.50 just for the sandwich alone. At other places, I can get a chuckwagon sandwich along with fries and a drink for only $6.00.

The sandwiches are quite good, the fries are excellent, the prices are reasonable, and the staff is exceptional. Overall, a lovely restaurant.

In my opinion, this is the best dining spot in Cullowhee! The staff is friendly, the food is fantastic, and the prices are very affordable! I highly recommend trying the puffs as an appetizer and any of their open-faced sandwiches for lunch. Be on the lookout for days when they have stewed beef as a special! If it's available, make sure to order a stew burger—it's not on the menu, but you won't regret it! This place is excellent for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's a good sign when the locals choose to eat here!

A Cullowhee standard. It's the yin to the Mad Batter's yang. Although I preferred it when there was no sign, I've got to say that it's a bit easier to find now that the sign outside actually says what's inside. As to what to order, just order something brown and you won't be disappointed (steak, burger, fried anything). I'd avoid the green stuff and get it somewhere else. Not the place to go for health, but a place to remind yourself that you can still have a good meal with no capers, rosemary or cumin.
