What Dennis Schrader dislikes about Circulo del Sureste:
We were looking forward to having dinner at Circulo del Sureste, but we were stopped by the receptionista who told us the the empty restaurant was closed. They maitre de restaurante went to the kitchen to see if we could still get something to eat, but no. That put us into a quandary because it was late and we had no reservation elsewhere. Open Table needs to present more up to date info so this does not occur. View all feedback.

Very local but with good quality offering good plates for food from Yucatan. The cochinita and lechon are very good. Seems like time has not passed through the years. Service is fast and cordial.

And I don't need 3 waiters to bring one plate to the table, but that's what you will get when you eat here. The service from the wait staff is beyond anything I've ever experienced but I don't often ascend into the rarified atmosphere of restaurants such as this one. The restaurant is super nice, super clean, and I imagine that even the pickiest of customers couldn't find much to complain about with regards to ambience and service. However, we smelled cigarette smoke coming from somewhere inside the restaurant, which is illegal in el D.F. and for us is something that interferes seriously with the enjoyment of a meal, especially at the prices that are charged here. I didn't ask the hovering staff about it, but it was surprising because in all of the inexpensive taco joints and fondas I usually eat in I never smell cigarettes. Maybe it's overlooked to some degree when one is spending the kind of money that one can spend here, because this restaurant is enormously expensive. The tab was nearly $40 US with tip for 2 bowls of sopa lima at 70 pesos each, 3 tacos de cochinita pibil, a very expensive bottle of ordinary Mexican beer and a teensy weensy copita of wine. I feel that our meal was somewhat overpriced for what it offered, taste-wise, but for sure a lot of the cost goes for the over the top table service. We actually had 4 waiters attending when it came time to clean up our table. Kind of embarrassing for simple folks like us, but the place was empty at 5:30pm so they probably had nothing better to do. This restaurant was recommended to me by someone on tripadvisor as being the best in the city, as opposed to Coox Hanal, where I have eaten several times. I have to say that for my tastes the sopa lima at Coox Hanal is as good as what we had here, for about half the price. More lime flavor, less flavor of broth, but maybe the version here is more sophisticated. I don't know. I'm not an expert on Yucatecan food and freely admit it. I came here in hopes of expanding my horizons. The cochinita here is very tasty, but it is at Coox, too. We didn't have enough food here to give a serious comparison, mostly for the simple reason that if we had, we would have blown a serious chunk of our eating budget. 2 people could easily spend $100 US with tip if full dinners and a few drinks were ordered. Unfortunately we are not in that income category. Circulo Sureste is located in a neighborhood that once was probably de modo and is now seriously downtrodden. Most people probably would not want to walk to the front door except from their car parked out in front for a moment until the valet drives it to the parking lot, but we walked here as we were over in the ciudadela market, hunting around for some better than average tourist stuff and it's only a few blocks away. Coox Hanal may not be as good but for my money I'd rather go there twice and try different items, then go to a couple of other of my favorite places a few times for the same amount of money that we spent here. I give it four dots as the food was very good, but my feelings about it are mixed. I'm sure that I won't go back because I can't see the value for a person of average means, unless for a very special occaion, but maybe if I won the lottery........

Circulo del Sureste is the most frequent place out home where I have lunch. It is a few steps away from work. 4 blocks from Reforma avenue is a walking distance gem from the turistic downtown area. Visited almost only by locals it serves since more than 40 years ago one of the best Yucatan food in Mexico City, since its remodeling they also offer some Spanish and international plates. Spoil yourself with some of the tipical dishes like panuchos (turkey or pork) or the pavo en escabeche tacos (turkey) papadzules or some of the freshly made treats they offer, try the horchata (rice drink) and the sopa de lima (lime soup). When going for a an entree consider they offer generous portions, but allways well prepared, some of the spicy so ask how are they prepared. Very fresh fish is allways available and a special vennison dish Dzick is perfect to share in tacos. Most of the waiters are professional and long time workers at the Circulo .

My daughter and I and our good friend had a very nice late lunch or early dinner. The food was really good. The service is amazing and the staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. Specialty of the house is fish, as broadcast by a large fish tank in the middle of the dining room. But everything we had was well prepared. I this is not a white tablecloth restaurant, the decor is very informal. It’s a large restaurant with lots of tables and lots of waiters. We enjoyed the shrimp cocktail, the chicken Molé, the pastor tacos and we recommend their wonderful stews and soups dishes.

Excellent service, and the yucatecan food is one of the best in the city. The location and the architecture are not nice but is worth getting there. I would order a sopa de Lima and tacos de cochinita. The agua de lima is delicious and aromatic.
