Yannis - County Durham
Yannis
Description
Yannis offers a diverse menu that has the potential to delight, though feedback reveals an inconsistent dining experience. While certain dishes, such as the gyros and Stifado, receive high praise for their flavor, others fall flat with customers lamenting tasteless pizzas and unseasoned meats. Service is generally described as friendly, yet some patrons have reported disappointing encounters, including a lack of accommodation for urgent restroom needs. Additionally, a cash-only policy may catch diners off guard. Ultimately, while Yannis has its highlights, guests should approach with caution and manage their expectations for a balanced experience.

During our stay at Lumley Castle, we asked a staff member for a recommendation for a Greek restaurant and they suggested Yannis in Lanchester. We checked the website which stated it was open from 5 o'clock and decided to make the journey, which took us half an hour. However, upon arrival, we found a sign on the door stating the restaurant was closed for holidays. It would have been helpful if they had updated their website to inform customers of this closure. Overall, we were not impressed with the very poor customer service.
Im a senior citizen who suffers from heart failure which means I have to take diaretics to keep my heart from stopping unfortunately the side effects are that I need to pee on very short notice. I was outside this restaurant at lunch time snd entered looking for some one to ask no one was there and it was urgent. Having used their facilties for which I was grateful I looked at the menu and decided as it was lunch time it looked like a good place to eat. I got into my car and as I was suggesting we had luch there an emotes of the diner approached me a little aggressively that their rest room wasn't a public convenience. I tried to explain about my heart failure and apogised and that it was an emergency but this fell on deaf ears. I then decided with that attitude that I not only wouldn't have lunch there but would never frequent their establishment ever again and suggest to anyone reading this they should avoid it. Especially if you're a senior citizen or have members of you're families who are.
Disappointing take away, and poor value. Chicken souvlaki was grim dry and tasteless accompanied by very soggy chips. Kleftiko was a little better but pricey.
The food was quite nice. Disappointingly some of the quintessential Greek foods that were on the menu were not available. Retsina, calamari, prawns, kleftiko, baklava, kataifi, for example. It was not inexpensive either. So it was all a bit of a disappointment. My message to the business is you need to up the ante if you want to survive.
