Contribute FeedbackReviews for this cathedral restaurant show a mixed experience. Some were disappointed by slow service, overpriced bland food, and extra charges for tea bags. Others enjoyed delicious scones, helpful staff, and a medieval atmosphere. Despite varying opinions on the food quality, most reviewers praised the friendly staff and charming setting. Some guests even defended the hard-working staff against negative criticism. Located in the iconic Durham Cathedral, this restaurant offers a convenient spot for a snack or lunch during a visit. While prices may be a bit high, the overall experience seems to be enjoyable for most visitors.
We went for a mid afternoon snack...sandwitch and tea.My wife asked for an extra tea bag..which she was given.Minutes later the very sheepish assistant came to the table and said we owed 2.50£ for the tea bag !We refused to pay and told him to take it out..He came back and told us we did not have to pay because it was my mistake ...Even with thee extra bag the tea was disappointing.
I do not normally write reviews, however I feel compelled to do so given the comments left here by another poster with regard to the graduation dinners. I attended one with my family, and I would like to say how appalled I was not at the staff, or the undercroft, for the staff were lovely and the venue very good indeed, as was the whole meal itself. No, I was appalled at the treatment that the staff were given by those who were at the dinner who treated them like dirt. It might pay some to understand how difficult it was for them, what with guests turning up incredibly late and demanding the full 3 courses, others abruptly changing their minds and wanting another dinner instead of the one they had ordered, and wasting food (such as one person who demanded a vegan dessert and only took the cherry from the top! To the staff you did an amazing job, and kept smiling despite the difficulties presented and the prevailing attitudes you had to suffer. I would heartily recommend anyone to visit...
I booked a table for my family for graduating and expected a decent meal and service for the price of £50 per plate (we were about a party of 10). The service was slow to bring out food and drinks. The food was painfully bland and incredibly overpriced for what it was. The ambiance was nice but that’s the only positive thing I can say about my experience with the restaurant. I would absolutely not recommend anyone eat here.
The cafe has a fantastic setting in the undercroft and its cakes etc are fine its just a bit misleading to call it a restaurant since its offerings don't stretch that far
I can't find any faults with the scones at this restaurant. I tried both the cheese and herb and fruit scones, and they were both delicious. The atmosphere is great and the staff are really helpful. The hot drinks are decent, even though they come from a machine.
