We chose this restaurant because it advertised gluten-free options, and as we are on holiday in the Lidi Ferraresi area, we expected the staff to take this seriously. From the start, we made it very clear that my wife is coeliac. Even so, we had to get up and ask for the menu ourselves. The dish we were served was disappointing in quality, but that is not the main issue. What is unacceptable is that my wife was unwell for the entire night and had to keep going to the bathroom again this morning. I am very familiar with the symptoms, as I work, as an Italian Chef Manager in a school kitchen in London feeding more than 1,000 children every day, and I deal with allergens and dietary requirements seriously and professionally. It appeared that the bread may have been gluten-free, but the ham did not seem appropriate at all. They looked like processed ham, and I am seriously concerned that they contained gluten. The mayonnaise also raised concerns. This is a serious matter. A gluten-free meal is not just about one item being gluten-free; every ingredient must be safe, and cross-contamination must be properly controlled in the kitchen. I am very disappointed and concerned. This restaurant is not properly equipped to serve safe gluten-free food, and the management should urgently improve their procedures and staff training. When it comes to allergens, mistakes are not acceptable.
