The restaurant, located in Clogherhead near the beach, offers a lively sports bar atmosphere with TVs in every corner. While some diners found the noise level distracting, others praised the friendly staff and fresh, tasty food options. Vegetarian options were available, but some dishes were noted to be undercooked or disappointing in quality. Despite some mixed reviews, the seafood chowder was a standout dish for many. While one visitor had a negative experience with a Thai curry, others enjoyed their meals and the charming seaside village ambiance. Overall, the restaurant offers a varied menu and warm service, making it a worthwhile choice for diners in the area.
What a wee hidden Gem , great food drinks Fab cocktails amazing staff first time here definitely be back 11/10 smugglers
The food and atmosphere at this restaurant are both fabulous. The staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. We all ordered different prawn dishes and everyone was impressed. The food was scrumptious and the prices were very reasonable. There was live music, which added to the overall great experience. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would happily go back again.

Totally overrated the chowder was good but the mains were really terrible. I ordered the Thai Chicken curry, it was probably the worst Thai curry I ever tasted, the chicken was really tough and I simply could not eat it. I complained to the waitress. She was apologetic and said she would inform the kitchen. The Manageress then came and apologised but said the dish was 1 of their most popular among customers. I said that maybe the case but for me it was not up to standard. The curry was served in bowls 1 with the curry and 1 with the rice. The bowls were so hot it was impossible to hold and pu the food on my plate. This gave me the impression that the food was reheated in a microwave. Needless to say we will not be revisiting.
I was thoroughly impressed during my recent visit to The Smugglers Rest. This restaurant went above and beyond my expectations. The menu was filled with an array of seafood options, making it hard to choose just one dish. After much deliberation, my friend and I decided to share the moules mariniere and the prawn/crab claw pil pil combo. The moules mariniere was outstanding, with perfectly cooked mussels in a delicious broth infused with garlic, herbs, and white wine. The dish truly brought out the natural flavors of the seafood. However, it was the prawn/crab claw pil pil combo that stole the show. The fresh prawns melted in our mouths with every bite, and the addition of crab claws worked perfectly. The pil pil sauce added a spicy kick that complemented the seafood beautifully. For seafood lovers, The Smugglers Rest is a must-visit. The quality and flavors of their dishes are unmatched. From the amazing moules mariniere to the unforgettable prawn/crab claw pil pil combo, each bite is a celebration of the sea's bounty. My visit to The Smugglers Rest was truly exceptional, showcasing the restaurant's talent in highlighting seafood flavors with a perfect balance of taste and presentation. Whether you're a local or a tourist, don't miss the opportunity to enjoy the culinary delights of this outstanding seafood destination.
