The atmosphere was wonderful. I encountered an issue with the point-of-sale system, but the bartender kindly offered me a coke. The music was excellent, and the Valerie Tempura was outstanding! View all feedback.
What Grover Turcotte doesn't like about California Rollin' Sushi:
Nice food, but TERRIBLE service. Where was our waitress Hannah? Where were the missing items? Where was the bill? Right, the group next to us was confused about their food too. We even cleaned the table and piled all the plates. Where was Hannah again, we didn’t know, we had to bother other employees to find her. She is nice girl but really doesn’t know how to do her job. If I could give 6 stars I would! This place is one I will return to! The location is simply priceless. I got to eat and take a walk on the pier. The crawdads appetizer was cooked so well and the sauce was delicious. The Salmon bowl was run of the mill but delicious. I had a mango mojiito and it had real mango in it. The sever was nice and attentive and the decor was fresh and modern. This is a Rochester gem.
We asked to be seated outside and we were seated right away. They have quite a variety of food options, so don't let the fact that they are a sushi restaurant scare you away, there's lots of options and they happily made substitutions for us and said it was no problem. Our waitress was great, but I think she forgot part of our order, the steamed edamame. I asked where it was and she quickly replied it would be ready in a few minutes, it was an appetizer. Everything was brought at once, I would think it would be pretty quick to steam something . . When it did arrive, it was cold. they also kept stopping by to clean up the table when we were still eating, both contributed to my review of only 4 out of 5 stars. Great atmosphere here, they have music outside pretty much every night and it's in a great location to enjoy a walk, ice cream, a merry go round ride or people watching after you finish your meal. They are also dog friendly!
We recently came after we had really the first nice weekend where we can sit outside. When we walked in we were confused on if we just needed to seat ourselves as no one met us at the door for dinner. When we did get inside towards the bar, we were stared at by staff eating mac and cheese and no one said a WORD until a nice kid came up and showed us where we could sit. The waitress we got must 've been super new, because my boyfriend had to go up to the bar himself after being ignored for so long and our drinks were empty. She seemed to want to just be behind the bar (not getting drinks, but talking to the male bartender). Forgot forks several times and just never returned. I really hope this is a glitch and things will get better, but like my boyfriend said before we left, well, I remember why I hate this place . You 're going for atmosphere, really and not the service. Food was okay, nothing great. And for a place on the water for you to serve fake 'fried calamari ' which is no tentacles, just the fake rings all the same size that look like mini onion rings. Your a SUSHI PLACE. Take note because we 'd rather choose any other place besides yours in the area. Plenty to choose from!
I lived in the Carolina's for multiple years and have eaten sushi for years ranging from exotic raw sashimi to traditional rolls. Do not order the sushi here. The sushi selection is extremely small and very limited when it comes to traditional sushi. I ordered the spicy tuna roll, katana roll and the rainbow roll and each one was very warm including the raw sushi, tasted off, and were poorly made. After a quarter of my sushi I noticed my stomach instantly knot, and I began to shiver, and I needed to throw up. I got food poisoning. The big red flag is most of their rolls are NOT raw, and even their cooked rolls were not good at all, the katana rolls seaweed salad tasted horrible/rotten and I love seaweed salad. The poor waitress was running around like a work horse and we spent over an hour waiting for 5 rolls of sushi, she atleast took off the tuna roll from our order. Walking out I noticed the sushi bar had raw fish pressed against the glass (not uncommon) but it had direct sunlight on all of it. Sadly the owner of the restaurant left just before we cashed out, and the manager was unsure what to do so she took my number and name. I am currently dealing with my food poisoning... and can say, this has sadly been the worst sushi I have ever had.
Best sushi I ever had. My daughter got the Philadelphia Roll with salmon and I got a spicy tempura shrimp roll with coconut. Just fabulous. My husband got the Fish Fry which was a huge and thick piece of fish breaded with an awesome crunchy crust. The fries were also great. Highly recommend! Beautiful location by Charlotte pier on Lake Ontario.
