My day in St Albans was filled with exploring the stunning Cathedral and the park with its picturesque lakes. After all the walking, I treated myself to a peaceful afternoon in a luxurious setting. At Sopwell House, you can enjoy Afternoon Tea in either the cocktail lounge or the restaurant. The cocktail lounge is elegantly decorated with a fireplace, shelves of books, comfy sofas, cushions, and a soothing beige and brown color scheme, providing a plush and comfortable seating area. From the windows, you can admire the beautiful gardens outside.
We were very happy with the service provided by the tall gentleman, as he was attentive and polite. The food was slightly above average, though we did not particularly enjoy the scallops starter due to the unusual pairing with apple sauce. The beef cheeks, on the other hand, were delicious, tender, and flavorful. The pudding was not to our taste. The restaurant had a great setting and atmosphere, perfect for a catch-up. We would recommend this place and would consider returning for deals, but not at full price.
After enjoying cocktails on the outdoor garden terrace, we had dinner at the restaurant. Despite our group consisting of two intoxicated individuals, one sober person, and a child, the staff provided exceptional service. The food was delicious, especially the items from the grill menu. We ordered the Angus fillet steak, grilled lamb, and a few other dishes. The steak was tender, perfectly seasoned, and cooked to perfection. The lamb was also cooked as requested and seasoned well. We continued to order drinks from the cocktail bar, which was also available at the brasserie. The quality of the drinks may vary depending on the bartender, but the drinks made by the bartender on the evening we visited (Sunday, September 10th) were excellent. As the designated driver for the evening, I was impressed by the delicious cocktails. Overall, it was an amazing dining experience.
Birthday lunch with our infant daughter. Hotel is lovely, Brasserie is pleasant but a bit tired. Chairs were worn out and a bit uncomfortable. We were the last lunch sitting but staff were attentive and pleasant. Some seemed a bit inexperienced but tried hard! Food arrived quickly and was hot and tasty but perhaps slightly overpriced for what it was. No acknowledgement of my husband’s birthday, which was a shame.
My girlfriend and I went to the Brasserie on a Wednesday night. Attentive and friendly service, food was very good. I had a Terrine and a Fishcake, my girlfriend the Prawn cocktail and a Seabass. For dessert a passion fruit brulee. Well done to both the FOH and BOH team, if you are in St. Albans I suggest to book for dinner at the Brasserie, nice experience, we will come back!
