Positive: the sourdough bread and salted butter was very tasty, the oysters were fresh and so yumm, the pork is very yummy as well. Great service. Negatives: We ordered the schnitzel. It first cam undercooked, so raw chicken. And it’s way too thick to be considered a schnitzel. The schnitzel is not really schnitzel it’s more of a chicken escalope. It was kind of burnt, oily. Very disappointing. Overall the restaurant is pricey and not worth the stretch. I went based on the amazing reviews and left kind of disappointed because if you’re a german kind of restaurant you cant fail at doing SCHNITZEL. The atmosphere was meh. Nothing special. Somehow everyone loves to sit inside the enclosed places (not sure why).

Very generous portions which is rare for a shared plates restaurant. The crispy potatoes were great

The best Happy Hour in Chicago! Overall, food/drinks are always amazing and service is top notch. Definitely one of favorite places to go eat/drink in the west loop.

The Publican is a self-proclaimed homage to European beer halls and every part of the experience commits to that idea. The space felt lively and communal, with long thick wooden tables and high ceiling. Casual and energetic, it's the ideal place for dinner and some drinks with your friends. The food followed suit: no frills, no smoke and mirrors, just generous portions of satisfying, well-executed dishes. Their farm-to-table menu is ever-changing with a few staples, all of which are approachable and comforting. We’ve worked our way through a lot of their offerings, and everything consistently ranges from solid to great. We can never skip the oysters or the pork rinds and the chicken entrée is always so tough to pass up. A night out at The Publican always feels like a throwback to simpler times: casual, unfussy, and all about good company.
