So it ha... read more We have sailed into Cherbourg every summer for past 3 years and La Cale was a good spot as it's easy to walk to from the marina and has a marine theme! So it has been enjoyable enough in the past for us to return. This year it seemed less busy as we walked towards it, and I had seen that the brasserie du commerce over the road was getting good ratings on tripadvisor. So we meandered by, but thought it looked a bit 'stamped out' so went back to La Cale. I had not read recent reviews before we went in. Our welcome was fine and I recognised the young waitress from last year. We got chatting, in French. She looked after us fine. We had mains and desserts only. Moules marinières were good and i had a bit of a non-event of a bifteck haché, but the chips with both meals were very good. Coupe liégeois caramel and a crêpe with calvados were also both enjoyable. This is not haute cuisine and the staff do seem to huddle near the doorway. I also saw another couple arrive and leave when they were shown a table at the Gloomier side of restaurant and also heard a lovely young French couple order the fish of the day, only to be told it was off....but then it was back on again! So I'm not sure the negatives in other reviews are anti-British. It also looks like a better deal to buy the rosé wine by pichet, than bottle, for the same wine. In summary, la Cale is acceptable and we were well looked after this visit.

They mix the orders and it takes them 30-40 min to bring the main course during the lunch time. They do not clean the table unless they are asked to do so. I have not met a place where the service was worst. Not recommended!
