Books And Brews - Charleston

I have to admit that my expectations for this place were too high. It has a really cool vibe in an exciting and up-and-coming neighborhood called Elk City, which has a great atmosphere for creatives, artists, and musicians. So, naturally, I was hoping to find some vegan options on the menu. Unfortunately, the vegan selection was quite disappointing. There was a sweet potato burger, but it's not even featured prominently; instead, it’s listed as a substitute for the meat burger, which feels a bit insulting, especially with a $2 upcharge for it. I only noticed it on the menu after I asked the waitress about vegan items, and she pointed it out. Come on, Books and Brew, you can do much better than this!

Our server, Cody, and the owner, Claire, are both vegan and took the time to ensure we enjoyed a vegan meal. They also discussed potential new menu items they plan to introduce. They were one of only two restaurants participating in Charleston Restaurant Week and specifically mentioned that their dishes could be made vegan. We tried a veggie pizza roll (without cheese), a BBQ jackfruit sandwich, and a delicious apple cobbler, all of which were vegan!
