Reviews summary
Nestled in a vibrant locale, this restaurant boasts a beautifully designed interior and a menu rich in healthy options, including numerous vegan selections. While many diners praise the fresh, flavorful dishes and attentive service, some have raised concerns about pricing and portion sizes. The atmosphere, vibrant yet sometimes crowded, adds charm but can lead to service delays. Guests appreciate the skilled handling of dietary restrictions, though a few found the dining experience inconsistent. Overall, the combination of delicious food and engaging ambiance makes this spot a noteworthy choice for health-conscious diners, despite occasional challenges in the dining process.
Was Sharon H at Basic Kitchen a mag?
I am not a vegan, but my husband is. We were in the city for only one day, and walked to the restaurant from our hotel. We both ordered vegan meals at dinner that were among the best we have ever had. Our server recommended a wine for me, and we shared a dessert. That dinner was almost the highlight of our very quick overnight trip! The service was exceptional and we highly recommend this restaurant. View all feedback.
What sumsydsam dislikes about Basic Kitchen:
Ridiculously overpriced $24 for a Caesar salad with tofu) with almost no dressing and almost no tofu. We went there because of the reviews. Do not go there…I don’t know where those reviews came from — can’t be customers. I’m a pilot and I travel and eat in restaurants a few hundred nights a year and this is one of the few times I’ve ever felt compelled to write a negative review. Just terrible and I feel like they to... View all feedback.

This restaurant is amazing! Some of the best, freshest and unique foods I have ever eaten!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the food but the process of checking in (reservation or waitlist really need to be better tuned. Love yall. Just hate getting chronically lost in the shuffle when I come solo.
The cauliflower wings were so good and the cashew ranch I could have ate with a spoon. Everyone was very kind and accommodating of my large service dog. It can be hard for me to be in crowded places abs they were so considerate.
I have the flower cabbage wings, maize wings and white bean soup. the suppe was 15 and it was a very small amount. the flower wings were quite large and you get a decent number of them, but they are nothing special.
Some delicious vegan options. I had the corn ribs and curry bowls. the mais ripenings were unique, had a very tasty flavor. I could try to make home, it was so good! the curry bowl was decent. my hubby is not vegan and he also enjoyed eating. the atmosphere was exciting. “Be groovy” sign above the bar. it is just a few minutes walk from the city and has a large parking garage over the street.

Hubs and I loved it! Great vegan and pescatarian options considering it?s in the south. We had sweet potato fries and basic bowls with salmon. Planning to come back before we leave for home. Yum! Very pleasant server. ?? Edit: We went back the next day for lunch and had the Good Burger which was fantastic. The place was super busy even at lunch!
My tip: try the basic bowl even if you are a meat lover. This place has a warm and welcoming feel. It does not hurt that the bartenders are super cute and know their craft mixing drinks and trying their own concoctions. I was willing to drink anything they offered. I like the casual but upscale atmosphere of Basic and I certainly would be a regular if I lived in Charleston.
I was super excited to make this my new favorite spot, but we were disappointed. We seek out healthier clean restaurants in the area and we were left with a little more to desire. First all of the oil used had soy in it from what we were informed? also all of the dressings and sauces. We were also surprised by the small portions and the fact that our waitress never refilled our drinks and barely spoke loud enough for us to hear. My sword fish was very good. Hope to check
Excellent all around. Each one of our dishes was prepared perfectly and so flavorful while accomodating a gluten allergy. The servers were all so friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Despite being busy, all of our dishes came out timely and fresh. Definently will be back here again.
I can?t remember the last time I was so pleasantly surprised by a restaurant. We were a group of 10, so we arranged for a family style meal and the chef blew out socks off. The beet hummus with fresh veggies was so flavorful. The buffalo style cauliflower was ridiculous! The food was matched by the service. Basic Kitchen has a friendly vibe and top notch staff attending to whatever we needed, all while being playful and friendly. Highly recommended. We will return.

The restaurant manager was at the front when we arrived. He was affable and engaging... he took the time to talk to me about the founder. He cycled from Savannah to the West Coast and being an avid cyclist I found the story fascinating. The food choices were very wide and a lot of them had gluten free and vegan options. I ordered the Rainbow Bowl with Salmon. The vegetables and other ingredients were well balanced and flavorful. The wine list was a bit sparse but had offerings for all tastes. There seemed to be a theme of offering great basic dishes that you can add proteins too. Several in our group had the burger and omg if we return I will definitely order one. It's a wonderful local spot hidden off the main streets and a must visit.Dietary restrictions: They offer gluten free and vegan options.
Food was nice, light and refreshing. Amelia was a great server. Good quality ingredients. Nothing like these other tourist trap restaurants! Sorry forgot to take pictures of our main course only the appetizers after we ate half of it...so good! ???Food: 5/5
Basic Kitchen was a fun spot for lunch. Super food forward and very creative, as well as offering many options such as vegan, gluten free, etc.Food: 5/5
Very nice selection of vegan dishes. We tried the cauliflower wings, the burger, the basic bowl, and the rice pudding. All very good, particularly the home made vegan burger (the beets worked better than I expected) and the basic bowl. Also an innovative cocktail menu. We sat at the bar and the barman was excellent however we had a collection of used plates piling up that went unnoticed until we left. As it wasn't that busy, I think someone could have taken the initiative and cleaned up.
