**Glenn Iris Inn: A Mixed Bag Experience** Nestled alongside stunning scenic vistas, the Glenn Iris Inn offers a charming ambiance steeped in history. While some guests rave about the exquisite French onion soup and steak, others express disappointment with specific dishes, describing them as lackluster and poorly executed. Service, often commendable, can falter during busy times, impacting dining experiences. The picturesque setting is perfect for casual lunches or romantic dinners, yet concerns regarding food quality and restaurant management during power outages have surfaced. Overall, while the atmosphere and location are enchanting, diners may find varying satisfaction with the culinary offerings.
The Glen Iris Inn exudes a sense of grandeur and sophistication, giving you a taste of a more leisurely era. The landscaping is beautifully maintained, yet you can stroll in after a hike in shorts and sneakers and still feel at ease dining for lunch or dinner. I particularly enjoy sitting outdoors by the fountain in the summer. The food and wine are exceptional! Plus, the gift shop is a delight, filled with gorgeous jewelry and unique, intriguing items that are hard to resist!
My husband, our two adult sons, and I celebrated Easter dinner at the Glen Iris Inn. The stunning scenery and historic building contributed positively to the ambiance. Our server was engaging and attentive, showing genuine care for our experience. Unfortunately, the food was quite disappointing. The two prime rib dishes we ordered lacked flavor and were mostly fatty. The crème fraîche and coffee we were promised did not meet our expectations; they arrived lukewarm, had only a hint of chives, and were quite dry. The glazed carrots tasted pre-packaged and had no glaze at all. My husband’s lamb was sliced thinly, resembling deli meat, and was served with an unappealing gravy that reminded us of airline food. We spent $145.00, including tips, and most dishes were priced in the high $20s. Given this price point, we expected significantly better quality. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend this restaurant.
What an incredible setting! We only visited for the day, but it felt like a true getaway. The location by the stunning middle falls is enchanting. The views are breathtaking and it's accessible for those with disabilities. We enjoyed a lovely lunch before taking in the scenery and driving through the park. It’s a genuine gem tucked away in the New York countryside.
Our experience at Glen Iris Inn was disappointing. We had a lunch reservation for 2:15 PM, but called at 1:30 to push it back to 2:30 since our group was traveling from Buffalo and Rochester. We were informed the power was out but expected to be restored by 2:30. Upon arrival at 2:30, we were seated in a side room next to an exterior door. Unfortunately, the staff frequently went in and out through that door, and with temperatures hitting 95 degrees, we were hit by waves of heat each time it opened. The door was often left open, and the staff seemed unaware of the discomfort it caused. To add to the issues, several flies swarmed around our table. We enjoyed drinks and soup, but then the power went out again. I assumed it wouldn't be a problem and we could continue dining by candlelight, but after about 10 minutes, we were asked to evacuate outside and were told lunch service was ending. Apparently, they couldn't cook on gas stoves without electricity, which seemed odd given the historic, pioneer spirit of the inn. At least they comped our drinks and soup, which was appreciated. The Paloma cocktail was well-made, and the Turkey Soup a la Rhine was delicious. However, our special family gathering, for which we had traveled several hours, was effectively ruined. Half the party left hungry, and the others ended up at the Lower Falls snack bar for burgers and shakes—far from what we expected and not worth the trip.
The location is undoubtedly excellent, and the room was comfortable. We didn't dine in the restaurant as the house felt a bit quaint for our taste. The picnic benches, fridge, and microwave were very convenient for us. We chose to self-cater and eat out elsewhere. The staff were friendly, and we appreciated the lodge’s quiet seclusion.
