Being English speakers we were immediately made feel, welcome by the additional attention we received from staff with some English. The food was great, the beer and wine cold and as stated the service attentive and caring, thank you for a wonder afternoon. Find this restaurant on the river, 900 metres down stream from the train station.

We first had a drink (glass of white Dour... read more Staying for one night in Tua during our bike trip along the Douro, we were lucky to discover the Restaurant Beira Rio. We first had a drink (glass of white Douro) and some appetizer.The view, from the shady terrace, of the valley and the river is enchanting. We then climbed the stairs to the restaurant, where we were welcomed by Luis, the owner of the place. We enjoyed an escabeche of river fish with caramelized onions just delicious. Then we had a grilled rib of beef, perfectly cooked. Simple but effective. We spend a nice time with Luis, who is former teacher from the Porto area who has established his company (Dourohearts) in Foz Tua.

We... read more We were staying in Tua and had eaten at one of the two restaurants for lunch, so tried this spot for dinner. Arrived to a bunch of locals on the front patio. We were greeted warmly and offered a seat. The owners (husband wife had zero English but we managed to order some wine and dinner. Having read previous reviews we felt we could trust the situation! We got a started of cheese and meat and breads, then river fish fried (small mackerel with mixed salad, two slices of cake, a bottle of house white and a big glass of port for 30E. The food was delicious although I wasn’t stuffed when I left (to be honest, but wasn’t still hungry either . It was a nice local experience and I’m sure easier for people who can converse with the owners (not their fault we don’t speak Portuguese . As the only tourists there all eyes were on us especially how we are this fish : it was my first time! We also enjoyed our walk to and from our hotel. Go try it out but go with an open mind and a phrase book if need be :

What happens next is what we experience everywhere in the Portuguese countryside: they open after 3 pm especially for us, cook a delicious meal. Not a simple one even. We had a private lunch with a view on the water. It was just great Thank you!
