Barrer Hill - Canberra
Barrer Hill
Description
Barrier Hill beside the Molonglo River in Canberra rewards walkers and cyclists with sweeping views of the Molonglo Valley, Black Mountain, the National Arboretum and the Brindabellas. Well‑maintained bike paths and fire trails traverse pine forests and open slopes to a small lookout; the route includes a short steep climb and requires sturdy footwear. Bush regeneration and interpretive signage promise improvement, but weeds and limited shade persist. Plan for about a 5 km return from Kirkpatrick Street parking and keep an eye out for kangaroos.

This is a wonderful spot for a stroll, offering lovely views of the river and the new Molonglo Valley suburbs. While most of the path is manageable, there are a few steeper areas where wearing hiking shoes could be beneficial.
I stopped by this place during one of my bike rides, and it's yet another spot in Canberra where you can transition from suburban surroundings to bushland within just a few hundred meters, with stunning views and no development in sight in any direction. We’re truly fortunate in Canberra.
The bush regeneration is currently underway and it will be truly impressive once the newly planted trees mature. It’s a lovely walk, but sturdy footwear is recommended!
Great little lookout overlooking the molonglo valley river corridor. Will be amazing when all the trees grow as there is currently no shade. Steep but short incline to get to top. Paths are well maintained. Unfortunately the hill is covered in weeds and thistles after all the amazing restoration work done in 2019, I hope the govt deals with the weeds soon to give all the natives they planted a chance.
