Contribute FeedbackSmokehouse diner has a devoted following despite initial reception issues. The pressure-cooked chicken rivals KFC in taste without the grease. The owner's strict policy on chicken availability sometimes leads to being turned away. The restaurant's appearance is unremarkable, but the food quality makes up for it. Regulars appreciate the unique flavors and friendly service, although some guests have encountered unpleasant attitudes from staff. Overall, the Smokehouse diner is recommended for those who appreciate delicious, crispy fried chicken in an unassuming setting.
This is a great place to grab a quick sandwich for lunch. The service is good and friendly and there is a good choice of sandwiches and toppings.
Move over KFC and Chicken on the Way......this is hands down the best pressure fried chicken in Calgary. Eclectic and funky diner with all the perks. The owner, Doc, is a Fijian with his own way of doing things and sometimes can be a little gruff, but sure makes it a fun time. He has a lady that works for him sometimes and she is one of the most friendliest people in this city. Chris lives and works in the community and most people know her as Mama Bear. Biggest smiles and warm hugs, she makes it a fun experience for all. They marinate the chicken for 24 hours and then lightly coat it right before it goes into the fryers, handcut fries and homemade salads to top it off. Best to call ahead and pre order for take out or eat in. Blows all others away with the taste and juiciness of every bite. Customers come from all ends of the city for Broaster Chicken.
Gentleman on counter gave me the worst attitude for asking questions about the menu. Called me a foreigner that needs to learn better English to understand a simple menu. Never coming back.
We have become regulars at the Smokehouse diner although I was nearly deterred from ever going to this restaurant after having been unceremoniously sent away at the door on two separate occasions with a harsh shout of "we're closed"! My husband had the same experience once. We were annoyed. This reception even though the sign clearly stated that we had arrived within the restaurant's operating hours. Arriving much earlier one day and finally gaining entrance, I asked the owner why he would've sent me away while the restaurant was still open according to his sign. He explained that he only prepares (marinates) so much chicken each day and when it is gone he closes. If you should get sent away one day, don't be discouraged - go back! If like me you loved KFC when you were a kid but now recognize it as the greasy salty fast food that it is, you will love Smokehouse's chicken! It is pressure cooked chicken that comes out crispy like KFC without the sodium or the fat. My preference is to take out since it's a small diner with few tables. If you are ordering for a group I recommend you call ahead to make sure there is enough chicken for you :-)
