Was Marlen Funk at Birches Roadhouse a mag?
Everything we had here, from the choice steaks to the homemade deserts, was delicious. The owners, Rob and Rachel, did everything to make sure our dining experience was a memorable one, and it was just that. View all feedback.
The food and drinks here are consistently fantastic. Rob and Rachel are incredibly friendly and put in a lot of effort to ensure their guests have a great experience. In the past, the service we received was quite good, but during our last few visits (at the end of January and early February), it took us three hours to finish our meal. We had reservations on one of those occasions, and we dined in the bar area the last time. I would suggest having slightly higher stools at the tables in the bar, as Rob noticed I needed a boost and brought out a taller stool for me. Overall, I look forward to coming back!
"The facility is very nice—spotlessly clean with great decor. I visited on a busy Friday night, and while the restaurant was quite crowded, the service was a bit slow. However, everyone enjoyed their main courses. The butternut squash ravioli portion is small but incredibly tasty. The perch fish dinner is large, as is the flatbread pizza, and both dishes are delicious. They offer a diverse selection of drinks, including four beers available in bottles. We spent about two hours there during our meal. I hope our future visits will have faster service. The owners are wonderful and treated us very well. Cheers!"
We enjoyed an impromptu dinner at the bar without a reservation, and it was a fantastic experience! The service was excellent, and the bar stools were quite comfortable. Most importantly, the meal was incredible! It included soup, salad, a main course, and dessert, all at a reasonable price. I would definitely recommend this place!
The food was great. But the seats were not. The tables were too wide and the chairs too short. I'm 5 feet and I wanted a bar stool and my husband is 6 feet and still thought he was eating at the chin level. But the food was fabulous!.
Here is what we liked about the Birches: Rob and Rachel were very friendly and welcoming. The thick, varnished wood slab tables really fit the decor. We enjoyed the fresh Lake Superior Almond Crusted lake trout and Scallops. The meal came with shrimp and roasted corn chowder soup, a small salad with house Parmesan garlic dressing. A South Shore Nut Brown Ale really topped off my meal. A small dish of Gelato was also included. But, there were two downsides: 1) The $9 up-charge for a flour less cake and 2) We didn't find out about the amount of the up-charge until we received our check. The dessert was very good, but it wasn't worth that much. I would have appreciated knowing what the up-charge was up-front. I certainly would have gone with the included ice cream dessert after paying a premium for the meal.
