I don?t expect great customer service from people, but a couple of guys here could learn a thing or two. They?re miserable and you can feel it as soon as you walk in.
During my time studying at Simon Fraser University last year, I relied on the R5 bus for my daily commute. At that point, wearing a mask was required on public transport. One morning, in a rush to catch my first bus, I forgot my mask and had no spare ones in my backpack. As I hurried to the bus stop, I saw the bus already there and sprinted to catch it. Just as I reached the bus, it began to pull away, so I did the only thing I could do: I ran alongside it, waving at the driver to stop. Fortunately, the driver noticed and halted the bus, and because it was such an unusual situation, he didn't realize I wasn't wearing a mask. It wasn't until I was halfway to my destination that I remembered I had forgotten one. I planned to stop by a convenience store to buy a mask while waiting for my next bus. Upon arriving at the store, I searched for face masks but couldn't find any, so I asked the cashier. To my shock, he replied, "No." I was astounded; how could a store not have any masks? Feeling disappointed and anxious, I waited at the bus stop for the R5. For the sake of this review, I won't go into the details of the rest of my day, but in short: I visited the store, they had no masks, and I left feeling disheartened.
This location used to offer ice cream and hot foods like hot dogs, but lately, the staff have not been restocking the kitchen supplies. The coffee creamer and chili are often empty, and the ice cream and soda machines frequently break down or only have diet options. It has the potential to be a better store, and having a security guard at night would help address the issue of vagrants lingering inside. However, don't expect to find a hot dog or a working Slurpee machine here, as there are constant problems and stock shortages. The store is locked at night with no one around, despite being advertised as a 24-hour location. I now avoid this place because there's a high chance that hot coffee or hot dogs won't be available, except possibly during lunch when a manager might drop by. You can reliably buy cigarettes and overpriced bottled beverages here, but chances are the items you're looking for won't be in stock. This area really needs a well-run 7-11, as there is no competition for a properly managed 24-hour convenience store. The nearest good 7-11 is on Kingsway at Royal Oak, and another well-operated one is at 41st and Kingsway. Both offer great 24-hour service. The Circle K at Production Way Station is hit or miss, like many Canadian-run Circle K stores, which used to be more reliable. The lack of security in the evenings affects service for everyone. A properly managed 24-hour store should have security present at night to serve customers effectively. Not everyone works during the day, and 24-hour service is essential for shift workers and healthcare professionals. The entire GVRD seems overly cautious about late-night openings, leaving only a few options, like A&W, available at 4 AM. A well-lit convenience store with security would thrive in North Burnaby. Interestingly, even the night police appreciate fresh donuts and chili. You can see from the reviews that nothing substantial has been done to fix these ongoing issues.
