Gantetsu-ya - Brookline
Gantetsu-ya
Description
Nestled within the Arcade building, this restaurant serves a limited selection of authentic Japanese street food, focusing primarily on delectable appetizers. The standout dish is the chicken karaage, praised for its tender, juicy perfection, often regarded as the best in Boston. While the gyoza receives accolades for its flavor, the menu has recently shifted—eliminating options like okonomiyaki and intermittently unavailable takoyaki, leading to some disappointment among diners. Despite being overshadowed by a neighboring ramen shop, this hidden gem remains a worthy destination for casual Japanese cuisine, appealing for its quality and authenticity.
Feedback
The restaurant is great when they are able to fulfill the order, but we have often been told they are unable to make takoyaki because the machine is broken or can't make okonomiyaki because they have run out of certain ingredients. Perhaps better management is needed to avoid these issues.
Their gyoza are delicious, but their kara age is out of this world!!! I have a hard time resisting the urge no… the NEED to stop in and get some to go every time I’m in Coolidge. It’s crazy good, and their sister restaurant Ganko Ittetsu makes this the best stop for casual Japanese eats in the city.
The ramen at this restaurant is fantastic, as well as at their Providence location. I highly recommend it!
Limited selections of authentic Japanese street food located inside the Arcade building.Recently visited to try their okonomiyaki, but it seemed like their menus have changed. I ended up getting the traditional chicken karaage and gyoza, and both were very good. Karaage was extremely tender and they were certainly the best pieces I had in Boston.Unfortunately, this place seemed to be overshadowed by the popularity of the ramen place right across, but they are definitely worth a visit.
First time here tried the karaage (Traditional fried chicken)! We were disappointed that they were doing takeout only, but the 10 15 min wait was fully worth the tender, juicy, and lightly fried to perfection chicken which we quickly devoured. Honestly one of the best karaage we've had in Boston, and the staff was helpful as well. Unfortunately, they are not selling okonomiyaki currently. $9 for 4 juicy pieces of 7 oz. chicken thigh goodness!! This place is a hidden gem within Brookline.
