Guo’s new signage is vibrant and a bold improvement over the previous white-on-red design. Inside, trendy wallpaper and stylish pendant lighting create a striking atmosphere. The menu is presented in hardbound folios with glossy, colorful pages, offering a wide variety of exciting dishes. In addition to dumplings, noodles, and classic northern Chinese specialties, their new focus on BBQ and skewers adds a refreshing twist. With a BYOB policy, the restaurant has strong appeal for a younger, adventurous crowd. We discovered Chef Guo while exploring Elmhurst and were intrigued by the fresh look and inviting signage. We sampled several lunch specials—Beef with Cumin, Moo Shu Pork, Black Fungus with Pork, and Eggplant with Minced Pork. Unfortunately, the dishes didn’t quite live up to our expectations. The Moo Shu Pork especially missed the mark, and the black fungus dish contained only a small amount of pork, which was disappointing. Service was also rather slow. Despite these drawbacks, Guo’s is a welcome new addition to the neighborhood, and I’m interested in returning to try more of their menu. For now, I’m rating it 4 out of 5 stars. Note that the restaurant accepts debit cards only but offers about an 8% discount for cash payments.
Pros: The fried fish and skewers were tasty, and the restaurant stays open until 2 AM. Cons: The service was inattentive, as we had to ask for the menu. The grilled fish was overcooked and had an off-putting odor. The noodles were thicker than I preferred.
Guo’s was a disappointing experience compared to the excellent Uncle Zhao. The food on the menu was mediocre at best, and it’s unfortunate to have lost Uncle Zhao’s quality. I probably won’t be returning to Guo’s. The crispy cumin lamb was neither crispy nor flavorful, with barely any cumin taste. The mapo tofu fell short of Uncle Zhao’s version, coming off as just average. The hand-pulled noodles were the most disappointing—they lacked any real flavor.
Interesting selection of skewered meats and offal. Oyster was amazing! Unlike most Chinese restaurants.
The food is very authentic northeast Chinese food. Please remember this restaurant provides Chinese food from a specific providence of China and it keeps the way it’s supposed to be cooked. I heard ppl complain to the chef the pork stew isdifferent from what she expects. It’s prob because she doesn’t know what authentic northeastern food is supposed to be. Thefood is super yummy with very reasonable price. Highly recommend a few dishes sweet and sour pork ??? , grilled oyster big asyour palm , lamb soup it’s prob secret menu haha . Will come back again soon!
