It was my first time Five Bells. My friends were hosting the quiz there that evening. We were greeted with a smile and were immediately taken to our table in the area where the quiz was. Few things on the menu aren't available but that didn't matter. We picked fish and chips. This was a good choice, such big portions. Really lovely food and the service was quick and super friendly. Price per person: £10–20 View all feedback.
What Andrew doesn't like about Five Bells:
Have always loved Five Bells, whole family do but went for lunch today and was our first poor experience there. Handed a list of all the food not available, the sandwiches we had were a mess and couldn't hear ourselves over the music blasting out of the kitchen (I think it was techno, possibly rave). The staff could obviously hear it but did nothing about it until we mentioned it at the end of the meal, then it went... View all feedback.
This has been my local for over 10 years and we still walk past it on a daily basis, but no longer enter. Unfortunately, since the previous landlady departed, the place has been ruined. The current landlord Ryan or Eamonn (Nobody knows his real identity) has created a toxic culture surrounding the pub with numerous outbursts on social media. Within, the pub has zero atmosphere, the landlord is rude and abrupt to deal with and it's just not a very nice place to go. It's such a shame as we have spend the last 10 years visiting the pub for a drink after a dog walk around the fields and numerous great nights having dinner when the pub and it's clients were valued under Darren and Caroline and later Debbie. Drive the extra 2 miles and go to the King's Head in Pebmarsh or Whispers in Halstead.
Absolutely amazing pub, will definitely be making a few more visits to here, I'd happily walk from Halstead to Colne Engaine to have a few drinks and a meal. Ryan was a fantastic host, the food absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was friendly and delightful Would highly recommend the chicken, bacon and leek pie, I could have just eaten the pastry by itself!
This pub resturant is under new management, and i am so pleased to advise that it was a Very good experience. Welcome was very good immediately felt valued. Food came up quickly and was VERY VERY GOOD !Atmosphere was nice, several people in the bar at 6.30 in the evening, and they were pleasant and welcoming. Our little dog enjoyed a fuss. I speak as I find and the whole experience was very good. We have booked Sunday lunch I am so pleased that we have a nice new local. Thanks to Brian.
Although a Monday and wasn't busy as we seemed to be the first people to be seated one of our party had a longer wait for their meal which was embarrassing for the other members of the party. The meals served weren't as per the menu description and the late meal consisted of dry wrinkled five beans that looked reheated. We were offered free desserts but our first time visit was spoilt especially as it was a birthday lunch. Doubt we will revisit.
Pretty awful all round in my opinion, a real shame. Will not go out of my way to visit here again. Would certainly not recommend.
