Very special atmosphere in this old mansion. In addition to the usual (meat) fare tgey have hunter dishes on offer, things that you rarely get. I tried pheasant with chestnut, a bit salty but still good. If you like cod, don’t miss the codfish salad starter. Be sure to call ahead for dinner.

Recommended by our host Luis from Solar de Santa Maria Just 5 minutes walk away. The dining room was impressive as was the menu. However 27 years in the country, and I forgot that many locals particularly in the north seem to prefer their food just warm rather than hot? The quality of the meats was excellent and so were the sauces, but overall marred by being served on cold plates. My remark to the waitress was immediately passed up and the owner António and his wife came separately to enquire. The excuse was that although they might heat the plates in winter, they didn't in summer. Since it was 12C and rainy it didn't feel summery! The service and desserts were very good but for us the meal was marred by the temperature at which the food was served.

Don't be put off by the splendor of the place. It looks massively expensive but it wasn't. The service is excellent, the surroundings are lovely and the food was very, very good. Javali was the best I've ever had. It was a bit like stepping back in time with the glamour but worth a try.

The food, the wine, the service and the ambiance of the highest quality. Traditional dishes prepared with care and presented beautifully. Each dish served with different vegetables. And the best is the price! Very reasonably priced.

On our way home from a terrific birthday getaway we stopped in Bragança! What a way to begin my 68th circle around the sun -Restaurante Solar Bragançano! Our fantastic hosts, Dona Ana and Antonio welcomed us into their restaurant with both elegance, patience and calm! We sat in the most romantic patio and drank their house wine and house-made olive oil drizzled over toasted rustic bread. We started with a not-so-simple salad : Alface topped with smoked salmon, egg, herbs, pickled beets, fresh ripe tomatoes —-I didn’t need anything more… we were then served two outstanding “game” meals on beautiful oversized plates—stewed partridge with a little nest of fried potatoes filled with sautéed grapes and quail egg-a light au jus with grapes , snow pea pods ,cabbage and purée of chestnuts. Our second plate was stewed pheasant with sautéed fava beans , pumpkin and roasted potatoes with a sliced apple topped with red fruit jam! It is my birthday weekend so a surprise ending of the owners own recipe: A wonderful moist cake of eggs, sugar and corn flour—so delicate you can not believe it is only three ingredients and beside it was a tart lemon ice cream, cherry soup and light-as-air meringue, followed by great coffee served in bone China was a fitting end to this extravaganza.
